Oh geez. Now all the punters are going to start riding 5 fins 'just like Kelly'. Looks like the quad fad will be over. Now it'll be 5 fins. FCS (Macquarie Bank) will be loving it.

I also sense a new Flintstones movie is on the cards for release soon with CI naming Kelly's board the 'Fred Rubble'.

Looks interesting, I'm guessing he wanted the middle fin for feedback of the center-line during turns. Its look a little too busy to me though, I wouldn't try it myself.
Although there is a lot of raving about the Griffin five finners over at Swaylocks, maybe it does have some merit? I just can't understand how a five-fin surfboard can be turned, I can imagine it being like driving a mini cooper with giant drag slicks in the back.

Only ever had 1 quad and never had that centre-line issue so many seem to talk about. Might have been the vee through the tail. I did have issues in the release off the top. Took me awhile to sort it (almost completely) by tinkering with fins. I recently snapped the board and doubt I'll be getting another quad anytime soon. Certainly have some advantages, but generally I'm pretty happy on the humble thruster.

The Griffin setup is quite different to what Slater had. On a Griffin the back fins are quite small, in line and the sides are right on the rail. It works best with a short wide tailed fish type design, it basically makes them surf more like a performance shorty, but with all the glide and trim speed of a fish. Slaters is very similar to the Bourton experiment i.e a McKee set up with a centre blade.

Cant resist buying one now, if Kelly surfed it a few times in heats (he lost), I'm getting it!
