duckdiving a mal depends on how thick your board is and how proficient you are at duckdiving in the first place.... i can duckdive one of my mals because it is only 2and 5/4 inches thick. Some of you older crew with 3" thick boards it would be a deadset challenge, but i would have a go! Have fun guys. Just dont duckdive on bigger days, cause you will guaranteed crease your board.

Mactavish!t,
Mass produced pop-outs, from the guy who SOLD his soul to the DEVIL!
do you also drink Icy cold cans of COCA COLA with your KFC in your MERCEDES BENZ whilst wearing your VOLCOM t-shirt your LEVIS jeans, OAKLEY'S and GLOBE shoes?
The Answer = Local shapers, cheaper and personalised. if your board doesn't work out you've got a chance to rectify, try doin that with a Mac off the rack!!

Um, if the board by your local shaper doesn't work out, you say you can rectify it? I work pretty closely with my local shaper, but when the new board doesn't go exactly how I'd hoped, he doesn't give me my money back. What does yours do?
Mercedes Benz? Actually I drive a Commodore, but if you gave me a Mercedes I wouldn't knock it back. Knocked back a few Cokes, though.
And love my Levi's - gotta trust the old faithfuls - like McTavish, one of the inventors of the short board. Probably doesn't stack up against your local guy's achievements, but he did his best.
Sold his soul? I guess, but then so did I. I hope to get paid as much I can for my labour. Not like your local guy, who works for love not money - just like you.
Can't trust those boards off the rack. All by losers like McCoy, Merrick, Banks ... just gotta buy a board by someone nobody's heard of or it's total crap.
No decent shaper would allow himself to become popular.

"more and more people are starting to buy and want my boards.... wait! stop letting me shape for you! i don't want the money! i don't want to sell my soul!!!!"
pfft.
its a natural progression, i personally am not a fan of mact's, but allegations that he sold his sould to the devil are quite frankly bullshit. he started out in a little factory at noosa, in similar circumstances to your local shaper, except his reputation adn popularity grew! his fault?

I think MacT's surf well, I'm just not convinced that most people buy them for the alleged performance rather than the status associated with the brand name, why do MacT's cost so much more than A) a custom B) other brands on the rack? Is it totally because they're that much better? does the inflated price reflect evenly in the alleged performance? I don't see how it can. How many new MacT's are in shops around australia at this point in time? Hamish said earlier that Bob oversees whatever comes out of the factory...yeh right (he watches truckloads of boards popped out and wallet loads of cash come in), the reason MacT's are so damn popular is because of the marketing more than the boards. Its a triumph for commercialism. Yuppies line up at Dripping Wet and Bennetts busting to buy the most expensive boards with the biggest decals and fancy paint. Over the years I have come to associate MacT's with Yuppy kooks, perhaps this is the biggest injustice; that such "good" boards are riden by such talentless disrespectful ignorant (ignorant of the unwritten laws) wankers. Ok I'll admit it MacT's probably are very good boards, its probably more of a problem with the people who ride them, I have seen lots of surfers schralping on MacT's but perhaps unfortunately I've seen way more dropping in, poo-stancing and kooking out. How much soul can you have if you sell your own name? and for what - money! I love money as much as the next bloke but there has to be a limit to how far people will go to get some. Having a big recognisable logo on your boards is a double edge sword; you have to take the good assosiations with the bad!

MacT's are generally not the most expensive boards in the shop. Donald T's and other US imports generally are.
I moved to a MacT after a custom by a local shaper based on a friend's recommendation who has travelled through about 10 longboards - custom & shop. The MacT cost a lot more however the quality of the board is worth it. A beautifully made board that works very well for me. I spoke to the factory and was given specs to suit me. I then rang around to see who had that board in stock. Hate the decals & spray job - love the board.
As to selling his soul, according to an interview with Warren Cornish in either ALB or PL , MacT transferred his brand name to Cornish some 20 years ago to repay a debt. Bob and Cornish work together to produce the boards. Bob designs & Cornish oversees the manaufacture of the boards. The partnership obviously works. I expect the board to last for years.
I might try a custom for my next board. Either SOD or Rabbige. However I would want the board to be built as well as the MacT.
Kooks do buy MacTs, kooks also buy other boards. They probably buy Rip Curl or Billabong or O'Neill or QS wetsuits too. Bag the wetsuit because of who buys them ?

i agree with what you guys are saying about kooks riding mac's..... im not sticking up for the kooks, i've owned 11 mals in my life and never a mac, but the thing that annoys me about your arguement is the whole 'going too far to make a buck, selling soul' etc. you can't stop progress mate....
you're saying that they get all their boards from marketing etc.? true. which is exactly why bob cant have a change of heart and go 'sorry fellas, i feel that im selling my soul by selling these kooks these pretty boards'
hate him or not, he is probably the biggest employer in the longboard industry, givin a lot of guys who, like us, love the feel of the glide, with something to put food on the table.
dont like his boards- but congrats on him for goin so far- he's a great surfer and shaper who just happens to be a great business man as well, can't blame him for joining the three.
