Not uncommon in traditional sports journalism. Building relationships is how you get good stories so you don’t have to guess from the sidelines
Re: Just general surfing stuff
Little bro Tom is one of Kelly’s surfing heroes. Tom was at Kelly’s celebratory dinner after his win, as Kelly related in an anecdote during the womens final.

Yep, Tom took him under his wing in his early years on the tour.

It’s just a circlejerk fest.
The guy is the GOAT. Unfortunately, he puts himself out there so asks for comment. He seems to handle it well.

Yeah, hasn't done much in most surf media: just buried us under acres of Fan-lite hagiography.
Surf media writers become de facto PR agents for their buddies- which is fine- it just doesn't offer much illumination.
Luckily, Kelly tells most of the interesting stories (about himself) himself- so we have a public record along with his achievements to use as material.

Here's some COD psychology- Kelly loves to be adored, but almost invariably is at his most interesting when being challenged.

I don’t think it is ok. It’s boring and no different to Murdoch type back scratching. Even more insidious there’s this obvious sycophantic need to be “in” with this surfing inner sanctum. It’s so shit.steve shearer wrote: ↑Tue Feb 08, 2022 7:36 pmYeah, hasn't done much in most surf media: just buried us under acres of Fan-lite hagiography.

Well maybe. I don’t know the bloke so couldn’t possibly comment.steve shearer wrote: ↑Tue Feb 08, 2022 7:39 pmHere's some COD psychology- Kelly loves to be adored, but almost invariably is at his most interesting when being challenged.
How do you feel now that the dust has settled that you went with the ‘women didn’t run’ angle for your finals day write up? Obviously you and Stu are well aware that your audience is near 100% angry middle aged core lords, so tailor your articles accordingly, but do you think you did Slater a bit of a disservice? I mean yeah, hagiography is generally too saccharine but time and a place, ay

Perfectly fine.
I'd been blowing acres of smoke up Slater achievements all week, so felt the heavy lifting was done.
He got a ton of attention in my finals wrap.
The buried story of the WSL ghosting the women and gas-lighting the audience was equally noteworthy in my eyes, and judging from the reaction everywhere, worthy of telling.

You aren’t the room Yuke You are just a wonky cafe table with a missing rubber pad on the end of one leg.

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.

Re: Just general surfing stuff
Given that reportedly the WSL exists because Dirk Ziff’s wife became a fan of the women’s tour, you could argue that the progress of the women’s events is the main story.

She pointed out, accurately, that it didn't matter much .
From a business/marketing standpoint you HAVE TO appeal to the female audience, they buy most of the surf companies' high margin clothing.
Ask any surf shop owner, profit comes from selling apparel, not boards.

Re: Just general surfing stuff
The women did fine and the wsl did too. The only people who would have noticed anything amiss were those hoping they would fail so they can trot out their tired arguments about equal pay.
