I’d like a computer shaping setup too but I’d churn out too many ideas and never finish anything.
I too noticed the variety of designs in the water especially a high % of creative designs like Sunova and Tomo. Years ago people would dream of buying Channel Islands, now I wouldn’t see one in a day at the beach. So acceptance of diversity is alive with surfers.
So I see that a better designed travel board could be accepted for a faster paced lifestyle. Something that gets chucked in the SUV boot with the kids stroller and golf bag or as a legitimate Travel board.
Even using the concept to start a specific surfboard species. Shape a few different back sections covering the 5.10 to 6.8 lengths and a variety of front foils for different waves. Customise it as you feel or to suit the waves. And with the front foil being such a handy size, it’d be easy for small businesses like on Etsy to offer hi tech options. I’m not in this to start a business but I can see that this concept could grab people’s attention and progress wildly with many options.
Just sanding the latest carbon connector.

Here’s the 2 test boards.
No.1 is a reshaped EPS soft board.
No.2 is a poly shortboard. I’ve reshaped and glassed the open end.
At this rate it’ll take me a year to find enough donor boards so maybe I can start a Donate your broken board to Science club ?
If you’re on the.Northern Beaches in Sydney and have any broken or unwanted boards I’ll pick them up and give you $20

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm loving it Surffoils.
You know though, nobody here actually surfs, it's a bit of an affront to broach the subject tbh. Is there any way you could record grinding the boards up in a wood chipper and then put it in to the what I'm listening to thread? I think you'd get a lot more positive feedback.

I really enjoy the pithy humorous comments and a little intimidated by how quick you all are. I work in medical technology and to say it’s full of nerds is an understatement.
I thought the thread was a bit light on comments but the thread has 1000 views.
I thought the views were due to the name of the thread but individual pics have been viewed hundreds of times.
I thought the views were just the curious keen to see more so I think I’m just providing entertainment here rather than engaging in a serious design discussion.
So im not expecting a comment from Mark Price at FireWire anytime soon.

I'm not that interested in the pieces, just how you plan on joining them.
I ride a splitboard, where you can use metal clamps and all manner of joining technology, and weight isn't much of a factor.
I have bindings that actively clamp the sides together, and 4 hooks.
It doesn't ride as well as a regular snowboard, because the halves can move independently, torsional rigidity is compromised, and it's heavy.
I'm not that interested in the pieces, just how you plan on joining them.

Hi Alakaboo,
Some parts don’t lend themselves to being connected and joining parts of a snowboard looks like a real challenge.
How about interlacing sides that snap together, bindings over the pucks for stability with the usual tip and tail clips ? I haven’t finalised my connections but light and simple are priorities.

There's four problems that I see: the first is a strong enough connection, the second is maintaining the flex profile of the board (if you think that important), the third is a connector that is reasonably easy to use and the last is one that is not too expensive/hard to construct.

Don't want to be too negative, but those two parts don't look like they will quite line up , foily.

The point of a splitboard is to have skis when it's not together...if that's the view from above.
There are some that use tongue and groove joins but they don't work well with snow and ice in them.

I'd like a travel board of four pieces that could be a 6'4", 7'2" or 8'.
So that's a nose and tail of 3'2" plus two middles of 10".

Carting boards around Indo is a pain in the arse. The planes are often small and your boards don't get loaded. I've seen mine in the pilot's cabin one time. The ferries are crowded, Bemo's are small.

Best way to travel is on bike/scooter where there is even more pressure on board size.

So you are focusing on the nose design or the tail?
I guess easiest combo would be a Scorpion like board with a rounded pin and minimal nose that could convert to a gunny nosed midlength. Varying tail designs would allow much more variation. If you look at Mitchell Ray's flex tails there appears to be room for further modification with that principle.

I was thinking the nose and tail stayed the same and you varied the middle. So 4 pieces give 2 middles so you get 3 boards: just the tail and nose, tail and nose plus one middle, tail and nose plus two middles.
It would be really easy to design it and play around with all the components (rocker, rails etc.) using some CAD software. When you're happy get it cut.

For those interested in how the front and back are connected, here’s the ‘bridge’ straight out of the vacbag. Being a frugal Scot I used plastic bags from the produce section at Coles and the vacbag system is all about cheap but effective. The pump pulls a heavy vacuum so it draws out excess resin and I’ve still got to trim the bridge into its final shape. Once you peel the plastic off it has an almost mirror finish so no sanding required.
