Twin fins as go-to boards

Re: Twin fins as go-to boards
Just seems odd, especially when they are canted or pointed in different directions to the channels. If I was water flowing across there I wouldn't know if I was Arthur or Martha
Re: Twin fins as go-to boards
For fin plugged boards it's pretty hard to put the fin face in line with the channel. If you do that, you'd have to sand half the finbox away where the channel drops away.
Plenty of fin boxed channel bottoms around so it can't be a big issue

Re: Twin fins as go-to boards
Those Casters look like nice boards, anyone had a crack?
Re: Twin fins as go-to boards
^ I have one of them LSD twins. I like it. Sometimes I want to lick it.
Re: Twin fins as go-to boards
Phil... What size is it ? How much did it cost ? And what size surf can it handle up to ?
Re: Twin fins as go-to boards
ah ok, i'll write something sensible.
i got the 6'0 LSD twinny. It was about $700 from Surf Culture Bondi Junction as i recall, might even have been $650 - reduced price for some reason, most of their boards are $$$$'s.
i'm about 84kg, 43 yrs old and average ability. I got young kids so surf time is limited, my general surf zone is maroubra > manly. So crowded and crap a lot of the time, i take what i can get... you get the picture... i'm not talking electric high performance.
board is epoxy and quite light / buoyant. i could easily have got away with 5'10. maybe i'll appreciate the extra float in winter with a full wetsuit.
i've ridden it in thigh high to a little overhead. the forward volume means easy paddling and wave entry, it likes a high line and eats up junky sections. not a 'snappy' feeling board, more wide arcs and speed. the ben aipia fins that come with the board were fine in smaller surf, not so good in head high plus, bottom turns felt sketchy. i got a bigger set of fins with a trailer and board feels more solid, some of the looseness goes tho obviously. i actually lost the trailer fin and have an old quad trailer in the back now that is too big... getting fins right makes a difference. i'm gonna try it with a big thruster set soon.
if i could refine it i'd add a bit more rocker. it's got plenty of float for paddling so a bit more curve would make turns a bit sharper... i think.
overall though, for the general conditions i surf it's a one board quiver,
and it's a lovely lick-able orange colour.

Re: Twin fins as go-to boards
Sounds good.
Though I'm really after something snappy and tight in the pocket . Something that can easily accomodate a vertical top to bottom attack.
LSD sound great but perhaps a little too cruisey-down-the-liney focused ?

Re: Twin fins as go-to boards
Yeah cool. That's primarily the type of conditions I'd be getting one for too.
Also. Are u still selling that old beat up Byrne Tuflite ? The 6'0 TC one ?

Re: Twin fins as go-to boards
^ sold. that byrne tc swallowtail is a fantastic shape... will hopefully get one in non-tuflite from byrne one day... did you get a tuflite ??
Re: Twin fins as go-to boards
Yeah ended up with a bushman pancho sullivan . High performance thruster 6'4 x 19.5 x 2.5 .
Goes unreal in anything from waist high to double overhead - though gets sketchy in wind blown conditions or anything too fat. Hence why I'm after a groveller

Re: Twin fins as go-to boards
the lsd twinny grovels thigh to nipple high very well. anything below that i get the 7ft foamie out. MR style twinny is possibly much more hi performance than standard e suburbs sydney lurching fatness to pointless close out type grovel (I'm including maroubra - it's probably the best in the area but that doesn't say much)
Re: Twin fins as go-to boards
For the most part, in small to mid sized waves I'm finding some real positives with Tuflite.
It's allowed me to go down a couple of sizes in boards with a more refined board, while still retaining the speed, drive and momentum, thanks to the extra float of it.
Cross-shore and stiff offshore winds are a real bitch though. The boards too light and unsettled.

Re: Twin fins as go-to boards
making me wish i hadn't sold the tc byrne. that shape looked quite lo fi and fish-like when it came out, but compared to todays easier riding shortboards, hyptos etc it looks sleek. i think tuflite may have been closer to getting it right than accepted wisdom suggests...
