Highlights were a hoot. Folksy commentators were in keeping with the event.

Totally agree.
Ended up being way more durable than Surftech constructions, say.
Old surf techs and Firewires decay terribly.

Seeing a big wave board like the above, the size and shape, tends to convey to me the scary challenge of big wave surfing more than watching big wave surfing.

Why's that?
I've heard it before but can't fathom why.

Only non-pyzel in the top 4.
Pyzel

On January 22 the 10th Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational ran in arguably the best & biggest conditions ever seen.
Of the 32 competitors, six of them rode our infamous gun shape, the Padillac throughout the event. Of those six, 3 placed in the top 4.

I don’t know. It seems odd to me too. When I see a board like that I get a stab of fear. Holy shit! The true fearful body sense that the board is in an entire other dimension to anything I would do. The extremeness of it.steve shearer wrote: ↑Wed Jan 25, 2023 11:23 amWhy's that?

Watching big wave surfing I don’t get that visceral reaction. I know it’s all way out out my league. I appreciate their skill and bravado. Go wow over the better rides. I hope no one gets hurt. But I’m not scared myself.

Fair enough.
Thanks for explaining it.
I love the lines of big wave guns, I get a similar feeling looking at sleek ocean going yachts.
The hydrodynamics appeal to me.

I just think they look like racy mals with tucked in noses. If you’re used to paddling a 9’ board the idea that you could pull the nose in and paddle into a huge wave on it doesn’t seem that alien. Doing it yourself on the other hand does. The waves definitely freak me out more.

There’s a couple of 11’ mals out there pretty often.

Honestly, they don't seem to be fully functional in terms of design. They're turning from way forward and the nose is somewhat useless.
It seems like the newer form of thicker, shorter, forward volume shifted 9'6" boards that people like Alby Layer ride are more practical.

Firewires yes, the original surftechs no, they have way more flex and recovery that poly with a stringer.steve shearer wrote: ↑Wed Jan 25, 2023 9:09 amTotally agree.

Don't know of any guns though in the original construction.
