Re: mctavish boards
Geez how many of his boards does he make?
I reckon 50% of the boards in the water on a popular mid north coast longboarding point break were McTavishes this week.

Re: mctavish boards
Had to revive this thread
2004
"Mctavish boards, pffffff. They are all flashy and mass produced. Most of them are high peformance and are ridden by begginers , exept for the teamriders (like no one anymore) and are ugly and to mainstream"
Amazing what a difference 8 years makes, me had a few in the 90s good boards go well durable but the big M and kook factor put me off.
Now that the logo is more subtle and he is developing the logs/traditional shapes I could get back on them. Recently rode the Involvement and Neo demo models now just have to figure out which 3 boards I need to sell from my quiver.
As far as cost I reckon Mc Ts started the whole mals are expensive trip as even my local board builder is getting close to their price
Really enjoy watching Matty C surfing the involvement model on the mactavish.com.au blog

Re: mctavish boards
Personally I hate the involvement models that are coming out now. I learnt to surf on one of the f*ckers in 1969 and they still look like they go just as bad as they did then. If all you want to do is trim then great.

Yeah, but beanpole, an involvement model justifies the bowl haircut, black rimmed glasses, and woolly jumper.

They are the surfing version of a fixed wheel pushie.

Which is worst Audi driving, shaved bald head, cargo pants and muscle top with a fireball on top or a EH driving bearded mop, stove pipes and a flanny wearing with an involvement on top not that I want to put anyone in a box or anything these boards have been toned down and modernised jeez I just bought a NASA material surfmat still wearing flannies but.

Re: mctavish boards
Not worried about the look on the car.....just how they surf. The california kool trimming style suits them cause they don't like turning if they are the real deal.i.e. rolled bottom, edgy egg rails, large up front fin, racy lines.

Re: mctavish boards
I have been riding these boards before it became Hip just as I have been wearing flannies for 30 years. The old v panel ones I have ridden felt real clunky rail to rail as most had an extreme V the newer ones seem a lot more toned down with the V and rails blended together better. Out of the new ones I have ridden the Hayden Al Knost featured in surfing world which does addictive bottom turns and nose rides unreal in sucky sections and I only tried the Mc T involvement model (rented while in Byron) in waves up to 3 foot. These wide point back boards definitely have a different turning feel to them smooth and slow. I use my Al Knost model for the wally little beachy shories we have on high tide around here these run for maybe 30 metres but are great shape for noserides. I can understand where you coming from as my mate gave it straight back to me after one wave. I have found riding this board has made me a much better surfer on the rest of my quiver with my bottom turns a lot more faded and deeper now. I know this guy could ride a dunny door but check the spraytrack on this McT involvement model.

Yep, love mine. 7ft. Wish I'd grabbed one for my last trip to Bali instead of the pile of poop I ended up buying. I could have snared a second hand one then but it had speed fins which put me off.

Re: mctavish boards
Total board porn. Love to have one but the carver fish and a few other mid lengths are far more practical. A good mate had one back in the day. Seemed a bit fat for up our way. That was in the era of very refined Kirra eyed shapes e.g. Channels and thin bladey designs with trailer fins hanging right off the tail.
Actually had a few good boards for taking down south because they were traded for more refined barrel machines.

also love the look of these things.. the G2. his sizes start at 9'0+. 9'0+ would be good for big days on the points up north, paddle machine, crowd control and all that. but for down this way a 7'6 to 8'0 would prob be more suitable all-rounder for winter swells down this way.

Re: mctavish boards
Rode one of 7'6" carvers at T-Tree recently, a lot of foam but was useful battling the crowd. Managed to get a few cover ups on it, had to stand right on the tail to turn it. It was good for the conditions but wouldn't want it as my everyday board.
Re: mctavish boards
I was curious about his Sumo boards. They looked like something you could chuck in the car for a anyday board. Not getting anything myself at the moment but don't mind looking.
Al this is gold. "She didn't realise I was fairly high and spent much of the evening trying to figure out why a purple and orange cow wanted me to climb a tree."

Re: mctavish boards
I've had a 7'11" epoxy carver for years and years so getting this carver fish felt just like stepping onto a hotted up version of that without the minimal bit.
I had been riding a quad fish a bit too before that so I feel very comfortable with the general attitude required to enjoy it. It goes very well in most surf within its limits. It catches waves very easily and is remarkably stable on take offs. It's got his chined rails and where the flyer is at the back it is very soft which makes it flow onto the swallowtail I guess. It's got really good acceleration out of turns. Yes it has this five fin setup but from what I gather its not there to make it a quad if you feel like it. The fin place, ent is to give you the choice of how wide you want the front fins. When I first got it the fins were set wide and it felt a bit aimless and drifty. That was okay in little waves but not on better ones. I changed the placement in and it feels great now.
With McTavish I reckon his designs reached a point of optimum performance within a certain range of limitations and that pretty well hits spot on for me at my age, fitness and ability these days. Haven't had it in primo surf yet but it has been v impressive when the conditions step up a notch.
I got this second hand for a fantastic price. It's got a few signs of wear but not much tear. I reckon I will definitely replace it with a new one of the same dimensions when it packs it in.

Re: mctavish boards
@Beanpole....I’ve got my eye on a McTavish Carver on Gumtree, 7’6”
Don’t know what the construction is, eps or pu.
Did they come in both? Have you still got one? Good board?

Re: mctavish boards
Yeah, surftech did a few tuflite Carvers (6'6, 7'0, 7'6??) and I think that a couple of the quite well rated surftech softop models were Carvers under the hood but not labelled as such

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.
