Looking for something for unshortboardable small days, but needs to be sub 7ft to stay in my car. I'm not interested in surfing it if it's over waist high.
Want to be able to compete with longboarders on the get in early ability, and be able to cruise on shin high waves is basically the only criteria. I normally ride short alternative performance boards from 5'0 to 6'0 but want this one to more about gliding in tiny waves.
Options in my head are:
- oversized mini simmons around 6'0 (anyone ridden a jim phillips jimmons?)
- 7'0 stretch IT style shape with a stinger between the feet and quads
- mid to high 6ft range single fin with flat rocker and plenty of foam
opinions?
single fin egg?

Re: Midlengths
I've had some hulls and some eggs. They both do well in smaller conditions. Longer lined up stuff -hull. Peaky little beach breaks - egg. Greenough fin. With side bites 7. Without 8. I'm using an 8 in my 7'6 - amazing.

Re: Midlengths
I use a 6” in my 7.2 Bonzer egg. Plenty of fin and rail to go around.
That said there’s little difference between the 6, 6.5 True Ames fins.
Use a 8 1/2 “ Fibreglas Fin Co Larry Allison flex (very similar to Greenough 4a) in a single fin board.

Re: Midlengths
Bonzer fins for bonzers 90% of the time. I think a midlength with rolled vee and pinched rails needs a greenough 4a or liddle flex fin.

Sounds like you’ve been a few times. What time of year did you get skunked?

Is that one of your own photos? I hear the paddle outs are quite long? That pic definitely confirms it.saltman wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2019 3:53 pmDrailed wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2019 3:34 pmGet ready to be skunked in Sumba, that place is fickle as hell
Which break is it? The one out the front of the camp?

Re: Midlengths
JET give us a review of the Crossbreed. I found they take a few rides to dial in; with the rocker so flat they are very fast into waves and the rail quite low with that board weight can be quite different to start.
Re: Midlengths
81kg, 177cm. 37years. Average Intermediate surfer.
Board 6’10 x 21 x 2 7/8 41L.
I’m not the best at board reviews to be honest. But for what it’s worth:
I didn’t have too much trouble getting used to it as I’ve spent a fair bit of time on a 7’2 firewire seaxe. I’d call the crossbreed a more performance version of the seaxe geared at bigger waves.
Great rocker, not too flat, but had great speed without having to pump the whole time. Similar rails and foam distribution. It duck dives way easier because of the more pulled in nose and 6L less foam. Felt more grippy and sure footed with the single to double concave and round tail.
Amazing for getting around sections and racing down walls.
Needs more then 3ft to really get going. Tried surfing it one arvo in between tide when it was about 2ft, not a groveller.
I’m not a very aggressive surfer, so didn’t really push it as hard as it could be. Bottom turns felt like butter.
I surfed it mainly from the middle enjoying the trim on some really long rides with the the odd round house.
In the hands of a better surfer this board could be pushed harder vertically and no doubt would be great in a tube.
Would I change anything? Maybe a 6’8 x 21 x 3, make it a little more shortboardy
For me though,
it was a great blend between a nice wide stable platform that paddled well, projected well off the bottom, turned as sharp as my skill would allow.
I felt like i didn’t make a lot lot of mistakes on this board.
Can’t wait to go back and take it over there again.

Re: Midlengths
Outline looks quite like a waterskate, which I seem to recall you used to have - any similarities?
Re: Midlengths
The waterskate isn’t as refined. Boxier rails. Wider tail, slightly more round nose. I’d prefer the crossbreed in bigger surf.
