Re: Bells Beach
4/3 and booties for sure. No need for a hood. Wear ear plugs if you've got them, they'll help. Booties stop your feet getting so numb you feel no connection to your board. Enjoy.

Re: Bells Beach
shit, you can even do it in a good 3/2 mate.
you just have to glad wrap your entire body up before putting on the wettie.

I'd say hood way, way before booties. Most heat is lost from the head. Stop that and you could be out there in boardies.

Boardies and hood. I'm on to it.

Not having a go, but cold head seems more of an issue for those sporting the Kelly Slater coiffeur.steve shearer wrote: ↑Mon Jul 03, 2017 5:59 pmI'd say hood way, way before booties. Most heat is lost from the head. Stop that and you could be out there in boardies.

Simply not true I'm afraid. The amount of heat lost through the head is proportionate to its surface areasteve shearer wrote: Most heat is lost from the head.

August a fair bit colder than June, and they live there so used to it.Nick Carroll wrote: ↑Mon Jul 03, 2017 6:26 pmThose two 14 year old girls who charged it last weekend just wore 3/2s.
But 3/2s are a lot better than they used to be.

Yes, that's because the water temp is 14-15 degrees, which is 3/2 temperature. For christ's sake, it's 14-15 degrees here at the moment and I'm swimming in it. And it's fine. Harden the fuck up, AustraliaNick Carroll wrote:

Re: Bells Beach
Many good points here. And as such you've jogged my memory.
I've surfed in Victoria before and only had a 3/2. Used to cramp up a lot, which I put down to the cold.
I often sport the same hair do as Kelly, so sounds like the hood is the go. For two reasons. I'm off with the flu at the moment and the GP noticed my surfers ear has delevoped. Think I'll go the plugs and hood.
4/3 sounds nice but it won't get much use back in sydney Might just have to just suck it up for one or two sessions.
Those Patagonia suits are about 900 bikkies. Sharnt be spending that sort of coin for one day.
However a mankini, hood, and booties sounds rather comical. I've got a proper hairy arse too, so I'm thinking it would offend people so much they'd let me have the sets just so they don't have to look at it.

What's the lowest it gets? All i can remember was how bad my feet would feel in the car park at Gunnamatta when the wind was blowing.godsavethequeen wrote: ↑Mon Jul 03, 2017 6:33 pmYes, that's because the water temp is 14-15 degrees, which is 3/2 temperature. I was a bit tougher in my navy days though.

Google evaporative cooling.

But you don't surf on your head. If you can't feel your feet, it's gonna be hard work.

Re: Bells Beach
Your feet are under water and hence not exposed to evaporative cooling. If your brain is warm then the body's thermo-regulation won't have to retract the blood vessels so much.
Hence, more feeling in the extremities.

Re: Bells Beach
When your feet get super cold, those surf coast reefs can feel quite painful.
Re: Bells Beach
Sure Steve, so the reason you are one of the few people (only person?) at Lennox who wear a hood during winter has nothing to do with an absence of a thick fur head covering.steve shearer wrote: ↑Mon Jul 03, 2017 6:58 pmUnfortunately physics says the opposite.foamy wrote: ↑Mon Jul 03, 2017 6:28 pmNot having a go, but cold head seems more of an issue for those sporting the Kelly Slater coiffeur.steve shearer wrote: ↑Mon Jul 03, 2017 5:59 pmI'd say hood way, way before booties.
