No mate, not one. It was the 90's, the days of film cameras ... never owned one.steve shearer wrote:Got any photos Braithy?

umm...fishing story bullshitt detector is red-lining.
So you mean to say you bagged a serious king or three off the stones and no-one got any photos?
I want to believe.
fishos take photos when they bag a serious fish like that.....they find a camera, or a mate with one. it's bragging rights.
photos or it didn't happen.

Re: Summer 2013-'14
... Bragging. What's that? Seriously, is it for your ego or something?
They were about this big. 8-9 kilos.
The trevs were like this but ... just horses.
But you gotta understand the times. 18,19 & 20 living up there on the Island for up to two weeks at a time. A big bag of weed, lots of beers, big blocks of dry ice, genny setups back at camp ... There were always 3 or 4 of us minimum. We'd all buy 5 kilo blocks of pillys, sometimes 2 each.
We became pretty desensitised to good fish, and they just became sushimi, and/or beer batter fillets to fuel all the epic surfing of up there (to me, at least).

I must say "hour long" fights with kings either off rocks or from a boat do raise the eyebrows. With big kings, unless you are in some freakish place with no structure or snags, the story is over in a few minutes. You are either beaming a big smile or running your fingers over frayed line or leader.
And 20 pound mono for hoodlums off the stones these days? Hmmmm. Twenty or 30 pound braid for popper or jig spinning, and 50 pound for live baits means you got a chance on a big mutha.

Re: Summer 2013-'14
my proper kingy battles off the stones are usually over in less than thirty seconds ...with a screaming drag then ...ping...as they brick me. Never seen a kingy that doesn't know how to find the nearest bommie/reef/ledge.
Dragged up some absolute monster Samson fish/amberjacks off Kalbarri/the Abrolhos but that was on heavy gear on a pro boat. Even on two hundred pound mono on a deck winch they drag you to you knees.
Hang on Braithy....did you just posit a fisho not interested in bragging?
Now you're really in fantasy land.
So, are you talking about an island off NENSW?

Re: Summer 2013-'14
It is gents. One hella freakish place to rockfish. It's a short cast into deep blue/ black deep, deep water. If the fish took you back to land you'd be broken off in about 7-seconds.
Thing is, it seems 99.9 percent of fish, their first instinct is to head straight out to sea. For 12 months I never saw, let alone landed a king. Was just getting spooled or tangled or broken off on the alvey, then the big penn egg beater.
The Abu Garcia 7000 was the game changer. The drag, the pump and wind and torque you'd get out of the rods with the overhead.
You could get the kings into the rocks in 15 mins... But you had to tire them and play them for 45-60 mins to be able to gaff them.
14 foot gaff, timing sets and swells and bringing it all together.
They were wild times.

Should be some relief later this week though.
Been extremely dry here, too. Can't recall a drier summer

The scale is a bit illogical
Re: Summer 2013-'14
Cheers, 'boo. I know it seems I'm lazy for not looking it up myself, but as you rightly point out, without negative values on the scale, it doesn't show what I'd like to know. My local station would be way below zero

No, serious Braithy..I always held to this fantasy that Climate Change would deliver copious ten foot days at the Point so it wouldn't matter so much if we left an uninhabitable planet for our kids.
Now the awful realisation has dawned. Climate Change means a never ending Spring.

And we hassle Viccos for having 4 seasons in 1 day.
Better than having 1 season all year - and the worst season for surf....
Maybe the mexicans were right all along
What's the difference between Elizabeth Warren & Kamala Harris?

I don't think the sky is falling just yet. And that in way reflects my thoughts that it will fall one day. Just not yet.
This endless spring has been like nothing I can ever remember. If it continues, it'll probably cost me my marriage.

Migrate to Vic, endure an endless spring or xxxxx
Sounds like a great thread for the tangents page, looks like the drought will break this weekend tho gentlemen

1 week to go and I'm out of the water so summer for me is over.
C grade. No real run of trade swell, lots of northerlies and for the 1st 6 weeks very poor banks. Preceded by a poor Spring. Hopefully Autumn presents a happier state.
