Re: Where did you surf today ?
This morning I helped try and resuscitate an older surfer who got knocked out either by his board or on the rocks at The Hook in Santa Cruz. Guy was in bad shape, lungs full of water, and we couldn't get him conscious despite draining about 4 litres of water by pumping his chest - paramedics arrived and we got him up the stairs and they continued trying to revive him in the ambulance. No idea if he made it
In the excitement dragging his body up the rocks to get it out of the waves I dislocated my pinky finger but was able to pop it back in. Hurts like fcuk right now. Not the first time, my little fingers are fcuked from years of playing Aussie Rules and Basketball.

Great work, Groots. Those cliff stair exits at Santa Cruz look fcuking dodgy as with a bit of swell belting in.

Thanks fellas
Been a weird day. I keep checking local Santa Cruz news feeds to see if there is any reports.
Not my first surf rescue, but the first one where it really seemed like the person had died. I hope not.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
Once the lungs fill with water, or any other fluid, bile, vomit, even fresh water, it’s going to set up aspirational pneumonia. Even if their pulse comes back, and the person is still alive in hospital, there will be a cascade of system failures resulting from the pneumonia.
I was involved in a few of these type of rescues when I was a clubby.
Sorry grooter, even if the guy made it to hospital the outcome probably won’t be good.
Good work though. Events like that you never forget.

Good one MM he really needed to head that. There you go Groots, next time save yourself the trauma and walk away and just callthe authorities as they will die anyway

Re: Where did you surf today ?
People can survive drownings where they aspirate water.
Myself and and any other people involved in rescues always followed up on the outcome wherever we could, you feel very connected and want to find out. It’s a big deal.
