Mozambique
Seriously thinking about going to Mozambique at some stage.
I was working with a few Saffas (non surfers) who used to go up there hunting and fishing or just camping. It borders the north of Sth Africa and runs north for thousands of kms.
Tropical, cheap and largely off the tourist trail.
I just found this YouTube vid on the surf, which focuses on one particular area. Very fickle but insane barrels. https://youtu.be/FjiPnwdImKo
It wouldn’t be strictly a surf trip anyway, I think we would start in Johannesburg, hire a car then drive up into the south end of Kruger National Park which the Saffas tell me is safe and awesome, then exit the north end and straight over the border into Mozambique.
It’s a huge country, mostly safe although the northern part is dodgey but that’s way too far to venture, we probably wouldn’t go any further than the southern third of the country.

If you do end up going let me know.
I have friends who run a whale shark and manta ray research centre in Mozambique and can probably hook you up with a diving experience.

Re: Mozambique
Awesome boo, that’s exactly where we would be heading, around Tofo.
Re: Mozambique
Yeh, been there. Still pretty rough after years of war and I believe AIDS is very prevalent (cough)
Tip: Go via Swaziland. Amazing environment and a kick arse park you can wonder around.

Re: Mozambique
Some of the saffas I know have mentioned Swaziland, I mean Eswatini as it's called now.
What else can you tell me pants? How long ago were you there, and what parts of the country did you hang at?
Re: Mozambique
I was in Africa for about a year just hanging around about 25 years ago.
Swaziland - Mbanes and Big Bend are pretty good cross into southern Mozambique via Goba the southern side of Hlane National Park. You can head to the National Park neat Maputo and there’s some nice beaches south.
I think most peeps head north. I was based in Swaziland so in and out and frankly pretty stupid due to the state of the country, assume it’s better now. I knew a guy who died of AIDS due to rooting Mozambican prostitutes (I’m sure you won’t be doing that)

Re: Mozambique
Not anymore, the north of Mozambique is off limits due to terrorism and kidnapping etc.
Very unstable, but that’s way up north.

Re: Mozambique
No this isn't a hard core surf trip, mrs. mullet is coming. The Kruger part is not negotiable, and considering the north boundary is the border with Mozambique, it works without complicating the holiday. Won't be within cooee of the dodgey parts. Of course, this may never happen, there's so many other places we want to go.Pants wrote: ↑Wed Aug 02, 2023 1:23 pmSounds like too much hard work. That’s the vid I posted up top, found on youtube.Wyre wrote: ↑Wed Aug 02, 2023 3:32 pmLooks good to me!

As one of the guys in the vid mentioned, lot of onshore wind, fickle surf. Not particularly phased by that, plenty of other water activities and stuff to explore.

“And when it’s time for leaving Mozambique
To say goodbye to sand and sea
You turn around to take a final peek
And you see why it’s so unique to be
Among the lovely people living free
Upon the beach of sunny Mozambique”
Well, that’s just what Bob Dylan reckoned.

I got chased by an Elephant in Kruger. We were in a small car reversing quickly as it chased us.marauding mullet wrote: ↑Wed Aug 02, 2023 3:19 pmNo this isn't a hard core surf trip, mrs. mullet is coming.
