Yeah the takeaway on those twin fin mids is keep them away from the pocket and out on the face zig zagging and you’re fine. Even that JF footage shows as much.

I’ve had two 6’6” fish.
I now also own a 6’10” but I’ve hardly ever ridden it.
Felt a bit big on the only surfs I’ve had on it.
My 9’ hp mal is the ducks nuts though.
As was my 6’6” Tolhurst Fish.

I suppose you are right. I’ve never ridden one, no desire either.

I have seen one person ride a longer one well. But, that’s it.

I even tried to find a clip of Joel Fitz on his Cosmic Twin and even he didn’t look that good, and I generally love how those boys rip it up.

The whole mid length thing is interesting. Steve’s written about it in a different light (SN).

What made me think differently about it was when I spotted a Sydney surf shop owner who fancies himself as a bit of a ripper trying to ride one. He looked totally shit on it. I laughed to myself and thought totally different craft and frankly only super skilled peeps can ride different craft well.

I’m not that good a surfer but I reckon my style is better on a midlength or longer railed shorties than a hp short board.
Others are the opposite.

If a mid-length twin fin needs to be nursed through turns, then its poorly designed. Asher Pacey was riding a big Album twin in a recent epic Kirra swell, and there wasn't any hit of nursing nuthin' ... the board was singing.

Way to many shapers jump on design bandwagons without the knowledge to implement the given principles of the design, they simply do a shit copy of someone else shape.

Modern twins are nothing like the old MR's or similar ... they've had a massive overhaul in plane shape, bottom contour and fin placement.

I saw that. But his twin was only about 6’6.

Are the modern twins better or worse than the old MR's you reckon?

Modern better in that it looks like you can surf them in solid pumping waves with confidence. Though they wouldn’t be my choice.
But I have an MR in my quiver because I like what it does in small waves. I don’t have a modern twin.

MR has just put out his midlength twin plus 1.
I reckon that’d be fun. But I’d surf it in waves like greeny, cresso, flat rock, not Straddie or desert point.

Not a rider of twins but have mates that rate them way higher than the old MR's. Not sure if it's due to bottom contour, rails, plan shape or a combination of all of them but my recollection of twins was they were woeful in anything remotely hollow and terrible on your backhand.

Modern twins seem to have resolved this. The twin plus trailer setup also seems stabilise the set up as well.

Best twin fin I’ve ever owned or surfed was shaped by Nigel beckham, now retired from shaping, Kiwi gent based gold coast. Big glassed in fins pushed further up away from the tail, and pulled in a little closer to the stringer, vee running full length of the board, small single channel running out of the tail, hipped in diamond tail, decent amount of rocker. Went great deep in the pocket and in hollow waves, surfed beautifully top to bottom, whipped high and tight even backhand. It surfed much like a thruster but with constant speed thru turns,. Regret selling it.

Neal Purchase Duos looked like they are borrowed from that Nigel Beckham guy.

A little but the duo is more like a split single, a lot closer to the stringer
