why are HB's so cheap?

Post by rex » Fri Jan 18, 2008 1:53 pm

i've been thinking of getting a ATD custom with similar dimensions of the brad hughes board then realised it would be cheaper to buy the stock Icon Team Spec Dow
why is it only $275

ppl pluging board companies!? ive never heard of such nonsense...

what model do u think is cheap? maybe becuase they are one of the few brands to employ a proper cost to rrp margin ratio, ie smaller boards have less mats thus being cheaper

I've always wondered why HB's seem to be cheaper for similiar "specs" (like same materials, stringers etc.)

My assumption was always that HB must be cutting cost somewhere, but I got that idea from drawing parallels with other sports that aren't really relevant (like mountain biking)

So I guess my question is, with me being only an occassional bodyboarder would I be better off getting say an NMD (just using that brand because I've got one) or a HB of the same construction if the HB's a bit cheaper (and keeping in mind that I'm not going to notice the differences in shapes in any major way)

Cheers

first of all, your choice of avatar is very impressive chrisp. i once sported the angry monkey... anyway

the only thing ive found with hbs is that the slicks arnt as finsihed as others (only in the 07s), not in terms of rail to slick finish, but more the smoothness and level of the slick, ie. ive had a few that have had a rippled slick, nothing big, you cant feel it but when you hold it in the light its kinda visible. only in last years models aswell, but surlyn being only 0.8mm it picks up on the smalles of imperfections

ive got a NMD UNLTD thats got a rippled slick, its so bad that it looks like its got mesh.

its just the slap together market that the bodyboarding industry has become.

all boards are over priced. i get them at basic cost price, and even then they are over priced for what they are really worth.

its like buying a pair of nikes or billabong clothing, its mostly mass produced 3rd world sweat shop product, being sold at a 1st rate price.

I cant imagine that HB boards are made any differently to NMD, VS etc I am pretty sure they are made in the same place. Maybe HB sell more so are able to by them cheaper............the TEAM SPEC ICON DOW does not have those elbow contours like they do in that picture only the PP TEAM SPECS have those contours.

But I have a HUGHES PE and that goes sweet I also have an NMD PLAYER but prefer the HUGHES so.....Just get a TEAM SPEC you will be happy i reckon

At a guess, maybe HB is one of the only companies not ripping people off.
surf shops double the price of the board.

I got a DOW hughes. The PE Hughes and the PE Virtue do not have the concaves and do not have the deck contours only the PP models have these features.

The PE Hughes is sick I like it heaps.

Concaves are not that functional in normal waves (3-5 ft beachies) but in big hollow waves they go good.

What board did you end up getting REX? any decisions?

Yeah i reckon HDPE takes almost $100 off the board look at the NEWTON model that is $100 more than the COMBO 505.....

All the HB ICON boards have the Surlyn slick dont they Lambert?
