recommended board for a beginner?

Post by penno » Thu May 08, 2008 4:36 am

G'day.
Old bloke (well, late 30s) looking to get a beginners board for around 200 bucks.

Not interesterd in DK etc, just want to rip into some smallish waves for fun and fitness.

I'm 85ish kg (thats why i want some fitness), 5ft 9, so im thinking something 42 or 43?

Any advice on a suitable board, that will last me a while, and keep me going back for more ?
:D

Thanks.
Penno

nice board and all. but really, that's what you think a beginner should get? a dow with a straight/narrow profile? and it's not $200.

boards are either pe (dow)or pp.

dow is heavier, more flexible and doesn't last as long. get one for your second board.

so you want a pp.

two tail shapes: bat or crescent. you want crescent. you can think about a bat for later boards when you want to do spins or whatever.

so, you want a pp crescent tail. i'd recommend a nomad faction or a science competition series board ($199). both really good boards.

anyway, see these people at narrabeen.

Buddy I have a BZ Toby that I will sell you for $150. Its seriously hardly been ridden. I bought it just before I went to Canada and never really rode it and then ended up getting married over there and dont really lid anymore.
Im around here (Nthn Beaches) till the 23rd if you would like to have a look.
This offer is open to everyone else as well. Price is negotiable too...

PE is alot easier to ride than PP. I dont think a beginner will wear through a PE that quickly.

Thanks for that. So PPs the way to go eh, sweet, now im getting somewhere.

Do you think a 42 is the right size for me? i'm not that tall (5'9) but quite weighty (due to beer addiction ) so i don't wanna drag to much.

Bonusbeats, those two look nice, i noticed there is a Faction limited for $207 there. Is this a good board for beginners or should i just stick with maybe faction standard (on sale for $160)?

also, any idea how much postage is to Newcastle?

cheers to everyone for their help

If you want a good board for a good price get a manta ride TRS you can get them in a 41.5 cresent dow stringer for RRP $199.
Heres a link to the pics but i would suggest if you live in new castle get one from solid bodyboarding

yeah that is true. I just brought another winny the other week. After riding different stock boards for the past few years i still have to say this is my fav board. but penno you should look up the other suggestions as im sure there will be more fitting boards to you needs and price. also speak to Solid up there they should help you find the right board

ok, update. I went to solid in newcastle, and while they were very helpful, they didn't really have much for around 200 bucks. If fact all they had was a BZ Tech, and a morey mach 7, everything else was 300 plus after that.

Another surf shop had a elemenohpee freak for 200 that looked ok, but what do you think of this Nomad faction limited? I don't mind paying postage if im getting a good solid board thats gonna last me a while, does anyone ride a nomad? i haven't seen one in any surf shops so im slightly reluctant to order something i haven't picked up. I guess its the same as the standard faction but with a stringer added?

thanks guys
penno.

stay tuned for more dumb questions to follow...

That board looks like a fairly good basic shape with a few bells and whistles. Looks pretty much spot on for what you're after.

Nomad are generlly decent quality - so you shouldn't have any issues there. Given the specs of it, it should last you a long while...

i have a nomad faction. nice classic shape, good board. i've had a lot of fun riding that one.
i don't think you'll get much better at $200.

i don't ride it much now that i have a science 7.

the only draw back is a lack of stringer. i put a crease in my board riding shore dump at bronte. if you're not stupid like me there shouldn't be a problem.

I am hoping for a Nomad faction ltd (which has a stringer i think) if i can get one for the right price.

About the science 7 though, is this a board that would be ok for a beginner? they are on sale as well.

and also, what about a NMD spec or a Manta H2 TRS?

thanks for everyones help.
