Beautiful looking board JD. How does a quad setup link with a channel bottom? I would think it would track a little, is that an issue or do you compensate with smaller fins?

I know the feeling josh, I'm missing work already. Crazy talk!!. I may be in the water for spring so good timing. Could call the next one "codger collaboration" haha.

Get well mate.

Beautiful outline on that one too mate. Love the clean shapes with round tails and 4 fins lately. So pretty and useful.

Hey josh, today I was in the art gallery at Canberra and was blown away by some of the indigenous art work, specially the dot paintings. Have you ever done that sort of work on one of your boards mate. Just wondering mate as its no secret that your not to bad at art work.

Hey Channels - I tend to fade out the middle channel before it runs out the tail, keeps it a little looser - less "tracky" than the full-on deep ones all the way out. Channels can go with a quad fin set-up with minimum fuss - same concept of less drag behind your back foot while keeping some fin area in the wall for hold.

It's traditionally considered that you get away with running some smaller fins on a channel bottom because of the hold the channels offer. With that board above, the front pair are smallish, but the rear pair are not so small, though the perspective of the pics there exaggerates this.

I'm shy of recommending any "ultimate" fin setup because it's difficult to cover every situation a guy might encounter. Different stances, wave size, an' all...

Hey Digger - I did this dot-painting number a while ago for "Doctor Geoff", who wrote a medical segment for Tracks mag 20 yrs ago.

I did'nt want to rip anything off too closely as it's considered bad voodoo...

That's good news...

If you did'nt lose the fin, send the busted set back to me - I still have a lokbox plug left-over, so I can re-mold new bases. I think Michael's base on those had too much wood, not enough carbon/glass also.

A new one could done too - It'll be a while - I've just had the shoulder Op.

I think Torres cut that tab slot into the fin bases for a general fit, the plugs in a more typical depth concave - with the Kilmister that slash in the fin base would have been better left 'til they could be specialised for that fit on the board.

I fiddled to get them to fit with the boxes, that slash bit which the steel tab screws down into likely also lost some strength.

It was'nt that full-on with the Slayer because it had a bit less concave, not so much of the box needs shaving out to get the tilt right.

Glad to know the Slayer fins fit.

Fin systems all come complete with some drama - FCS always had the issue of the point at the rear base of the fins - the poker...so this one has a 5 layer disc of bulletproof Innegra.

Getting over-complicated...

So I'll be having a look into a new finbox coming out, with a Hawaiian friend - Called Gearbox, it looks like a good one - the top plate "load collar" thing can deal with really deep concaves better.

This one's the last out the door for a couple of months - the Ukelele - 5'10 x19 1/2 x 2 3/8.

Hey mate, how is the recovery going, hope it goes well for ya. As for not wanting to rip something off to closely I do understand. What I find incredible about dot painting is I know a artist who comes for Netherlands and in her culture they have incredible dot paintings that are distinctive and different from our traditional Indigenous culture. This is the only time I will post a pic of a board on your page mate but I saw this board in the Museum in Canberra and the work on it blew me away and thought it might interest you if you havent already seen it

Sorry for your trouble with that. Actually did'nt need to fool with the slot cut of the centre fin - There's no tilt in the centre, so the standard fit was alright. I say the set was built funny - had virtually no carbon/glass in that tab. With that slot cut into the timber there's a break point there.

I've figured out that i'd need one of the molded fins to take a mold off the base, so if you want me to have a shot at patching 'em up, send me an old Taylor Knox.

Meanwhile - Shoulder healing up...lookout i'll be back in the water soon!

Digger - I had'nt known about the Netherlands dot-painting, sounds interesting. I like the pic too. I have been to the big Gallery in Canberra, but did'nt see that one. I guess its been over 20yrs since.

How rude of me to cast aspersions. This one you never touched. Mid turn, pop! Completely delaminated, in two halves (but still both attached to the base). I pulled them and put in some old 101 fins with the premolded base and they fit much better.

Not sure what to do ...
You haven't gotten mixed up between surfing and skating and been skating with your surfboards? That'll kill ya fins real quick :)

Damn that is unlucky mate.
