Rip Curl Pro Chile: "El Gringo"

Post by stinky_wes » Sun Jun 17, 2007 12:06 pm

The Rip Curl Pro Search event is underway in Northern Chile in a few more days.

The wave is known as "El Gringo", which TC (the Tom Curren variety) has described as one of the heaviest wave outside of Hawaii and Tahiti, and it apparently is (or was) a very uncrowded surf spot. With a solid SW swell coming there should be plenty of good photos/videos being thrown around.

Check out the event website for more details;

This is just ignorant.

People were surfing Arica 40 years ago for god's sake. (Before the bodyboard was invented!!) It's clearly a second choice for this event. There are many undiscovered epic waves along the Chilean coastline, but this ain't one of 'em.

John Cahrger presented the Singers of Reknown radio show on ABC-FM for many years. Never knew he surfed though.

^ Good one Karlos. :)

king oath NC...I was suprised that the 'search' event was at Arica and not at an unknown break. I thought Ex-Isla Alacran was a well known wave, especially in the bodyboarding circle. Chile has 4,630km of coastline with solid swells pumping through basically every week in winter...think of how many great waves there are along the predominantly rocky coastline!!

When I was there I surfed in the Pichilemu and Vina Del Mar regions, which are the most crowded and well known regions...but there was still great, uncrowded, and a few unknown waves

mick campbell and occy have pulled out with injury. peterson rosa was offered a wildcard and turned it down - why would a pro turn a wildcard down?
and kieren perrow has got a wildcard too. should be interesting to see how he goes, the bloke is a madman

Perhaps terrified of Arica's fearsome reputation as a "party town". Hotel room blizzards may well be in the offing.

:lol: love the words on the photos page :roll:

"Hawaiian Andy Irons advancing into round two." :shock: and he lost, well came 2nd and so maybe relegated would fit a bit better :!:

and

"Mick fanning advanced into round two defeating fellow aussie and friend Dean Morrison and chilean Cristian Merello." :shock: that'd be round three wouldn't it :?: :?:

Geeze i'm feeling bitchy lately, I have know idea what's come over me :?
If it's well engineered it's beautiful .
