Arthritis in big toe joint

The joint that joins my left big toe to the foot has no cartridge left, it’s caused by wear and tear, maybe an old injury. In general terms, advanced arthritis. It’s been going on for a few years but has now reached the point where I’m taking anti-inflammatory drugs too often and can’t really manage the pain anymore.
With the distances I have to walk at work wearing boots I’ll have to get something done about it soon, probably before the end of the year.
The only real option is surgery to fuse the bones together where the cartridge is missing, so the joint will have no movement.
Have had a meeting with the surgeon to discuss the outcome and recovery time. Apparently most activities can go on as normal eventually, running etc. but the recovery time is very long, like 4 months minimum before I can work, and probably as much as 9 months for complete recovery before swelling etc. stops.
Trying to apply for extended paid sick leave from work, but I’ll have to get it done sooner or later anyway.
I have a feeling Crustt had this done, he posted a pic once of his big toe being carved up, but no explanation, just before his unfortunate departure from RS.
Is anyone else here a broken down old codger with fcuked feet? Or know anyone else who’s had this operation?

Our club president has diabetes and he lost his right big toe a while back.
Reduced his scoring opportunities in comps as he can only Hang 9 now.

More recently he lost the 2nd and 3rd toes on his left foot, right back up almost to his instep. Apparently bone infections are common in thing slike this.

Down to Hang 7.

It's got nothing to do with your situation I know, but just pointing out you could be worse off.

He's Type 1.
I think that's more of an issue with blood flow.

He didn’t actually leave, he had a really bad stroke which left him incapacitated and in a wheelchair with little speech and limited movement, so I don’t know, maybe he’ll post here again one day.

Type 2 can be just as damaging to blood vessels in the same way if you’re not proactive and get it under control.

Ah shit, this is where my big toe on my right foot is headed. Too many stubbed, knocked around and soccer-mad moments in my life. I'm not that old either. I have been noticing it more and more, especially after surfing. But walking heaps doesn't help.

It takes a lot, the big toe.

Good luck MM, let us know how it goes...

I've been lucky.
I jammed my big toe between my dirt bike and a tree in my 20s.
Probably broke it into several bits. (I was in 3rd gear and sliding at the time).
Never got it looked at. It twinges a bit but so far, no arthritis.

mm, I just posted in the shoulder thread about anti inflams. I didn’t want to do that long-term. A meditation course changed my thinking. I posted a fair bit about it and it’s been very helpful. Skip had an inkling I might get scammed by the David Avacado Wolf 🐺 pack. Thankfully, my toes are okay and I outran them

That rehab time seems very long?
I was supposed to get my big toe fused 20 years ago but never did. They quoted me about 6-8 weeks recovery.

Mine was an avulsion fracture/full turf toe injury on one side and a multiple joint fracture on the other side.

I think turf toe is when you sprain the metatarsophalangeal ligaments or capsule from a sudden hyperextension/flexion or a compression like landing on toe like a ballerina.

You're probably MTP joint or MTP bursa is probably getting inflammed from the pressure of the inside of your toe on the board (the area where people get bunions).
