Minor Rib Injury... still surf?

Post by kmagaliff8891 » Sat Jun 19, 2021 11:17 am

Hey all,

So I'm on a surf trip in Baja with a few friends and on the first day we jumped in the water to surf some mushy waves. After I surfed a wave I flipped my board back upright in the water and it hit me in the chest, right on my peck. At the moment there was a little bit of pain, but I was able to shrug it off and keep surfing. We even surfed the next day, not for long cuz the waves were kinda bad, but no pain. Then the third day, I noticed a little bit of pain as I finished surfing my last wave, and now for the last 2 days I've had a decent amount of pain in that spot. Taking a deep breathe is only a 4/10 on the pain scale... coughing is a bit painful but also not that bad... I can do most movements with my body with no pain, but I'm just not sure if surfing more is going to aggravate it or make it worse? I'm sure I can deal with the pain, my greatest concern is just making it worse and being left with a very serious rib injury that will last for weeks.. At this point I feel like if I fully rested for a week or two it would go away seeing as it's a pretty minor rib injury.. but I want to surf! Thinking about getting on a longboard to avoid sudden/quick movements.. Any suggestions?

Lol first post and you’re seeking medical advice from these idiots. You’ll fit in just fine. I’m reluctant to give any advice in case you die. Maybe just drink some beer. It fixes everything.

If it was broken you wouldn't be paddling or popping up.

It's almost certainly just bruised. Keep surfing.

If it's dislocated you'll find out in a hurry if it pops because you will have trouble breathing, but you can't do yourself a major injury by surfing.

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.

A friend fell over and injured his ribs badly. On the next day the pain was so bad that he literally couldn't move. His phone wasn't near him, his wife had gone to work, it was 8 hours later that she found him and called an ambulance.

He isn't the kind of guy who would bullshit.

I injured my rib area surfing about 10 years ago and went to the doc because it didn’t feel like a normal bruised rib and it stuck around for ages. Doc said it was costochondritis and it caused discomfort for about a year. Probably because I didn’t rest it but there’s no way I was gonna have 3 months out of the water for something like that.

Yeh, possible traumatic onset costochondritis.
Pad the area for prone paddling.
Surf now, rest when you can.

It's best to consult with a doctor or a physical therapist to determine if it's safe for you to surf with a rib injury.
