Plus I can watch my waves when I get home!

Whats the fastest wave speed you've recorded, Jimmy ?

As I mentioned earlier, I don't turn the surfing function on, but did for a few surfs when I first purchased the watch. One of the earliest top speeds was 21kph, followed by a string of mid teens, then one morning I hit 26kph ... I seem to remember Mick Fanning getting speeds in the 30's.
I once hit 64kph. But that was heading down Markeri St in the Pajero because I forgot to hit “stop surfing”.
I was getting alerts all day congratulating me for having the most active day ever.
Seriously though I actually don’t think the speed function is that accurate on them. Also some of the distances surfed out whack.

Try doing that on a Fucken Casio.
That's harsh, next you'll be slagging baba's Asperger phone.

The GPS data from your watch is useless. You need about $10k worth of fairly heavy equipment to get anything reliable.

I forgot to turn off my ski tracker app in Japan and got on a Shinkansen. Pretty sure I'm the only snowboarder to crack 320 km/h.

The watch data might be a bit dodgy, but you definitely don't need to spend 10K on fairly heavy equipment to receive accurate GPS data ... unless you've managed to go back in time and are no longer living in 2022.

That's how I know I'm traveling quickly.

I'm probably out of date on the equipment costs but I think vertical accuracy is more important than horizontal for surfing, and I don't know of a good way to measure that without RTK GPS or UAV lidar.

If you do, I'm all ears and happy to learn, it'd be useful for an upcoming project.

Wouldn't you only need an accurate SOG ?

In that case, no, I don't think so.

I'm perplexed ... isn't that what's required to gauge ones speed on a wave ?

Only the lateral components.

If you go top to bottom ala Occy you may travel 10m on the bottom turn and reentry on the wave surface but only move laterally about 3m, being a combination of along the wave and towards the beach.

Okay ... so distance travelled horizontally and vertically, that's probably a bit too technical for a wrist watch. I was referencing speed, not distance, which using the current technology would only be measured laterally, point A to point B.

How do airplanes do it, like in a dive?
Air speed indicator I guess.

Put an air speed indicator on your nose along with the Gopro
