Have there been many attacks in that area? Tuncurry breakwall always feels very, very sharky. But the beach of the attack looks big and open.

Condolences to the poor guy's family, so heavy.

I was following the DPI data for a while but gave up because they updated it every blue moon.

Forster/Tuncurry was top of the pops wrt tags (per drumlines time in) and very high with receiver pings.

Whale season now starting so more of these “incidents” (DPI words not mine) are likely.

No not very many.
My observations from the available data, Coffs was very low in receiver pings and low in tags (per drumline time in) from GWS.
But, Tigers were very high compared to anywhere else, (per drumline time in).

My pet theory is this has something to do with the Solitary Islands, which mark a very large mixing zone between the warm and cold currents, plus the numerous bommies and shallow reefs dotting the coast, ergo, whales (and GWS) travel further out to sea along this section of coast, and the warm currents moving south bring in the Tigers (and warm water fish etc) closer to the coast.

Anyway just thoughts.

I get Dorsal notifications on Facebook. It’s been a running joke for years with the brother in law who lives there that there is always a shark outside the break wall or cruising near the beach. Not so funny now. Give the frequency I guess it was inevitable.

There have not.

White sharks have been cruising that beach since well before anyone was surfing. No attacks, despite it being the most alerted area in Australia re reciever pings etc. But this was a big shark, not a juvenile, a 4.5-metre white shark. And seemingly not tagged. That's another level.

Hard to know, toots.
Your suggestion is totally plausible, but there's also a big mixing zone at Byron.
The publicly available data is pretty bad. It could be just that the contractor uses different bait. Changing from using mullet to shark flesh makes a big difference to the species that get caught.

Traditionally the Coffs area was a big spearfishing and shark fishing area, maybe there's some 'cultural memory' causing GWSs to avoid the area.

Your last paragraph brings up a question the “experts” avoid.

I remember reading something about Tahitians dragging dead sharks behind their boats after they’d killed them. The theory being that sharks avoid the area for some time after.

Sure that wasn't a Rea-rae dragging shearer back to their hut ?

Four tagged this morning so far. Plus pings.

Thought they’re supposed to be rare?

Guy killed was from the northern beaches. On a surf trip with mates.

Very sad, write on his daughters etc in the paper.

About time we go back to fishing for GWS. All these cnuts saying it will upset the eco of the oceans etc, bullshit. Humans are the apex predator and we will fish enough shit to keep things in balance.
