I’ve heard that bike inner tubes can spontaneously explode in Australia so no reason a leash couldn’t suffer a sudden and calamitous failure after even just a short time in iggy’s sweatbox. (Actually, I suspect that iggy is a serial board chucker when it gets above four foot, so that poor old leash probably put in an awful lot of work in its short life)

Well the thing is GST if legropes were that flimsy they would be snapping like pretzels all summer when the outside temp is 35 degrees and cars actually turn into ovens.
Don’t the inner tubes explode because of increased pressure and expansion due to heat since they are full of air?

It's amazing then Beans that you haven't blown up like a Hiroshima chook.

(Couldn't resist)

Now there’s a simile.

I meant a car left in 14 degree heat might reach 20 degrees Jimny.
Wrong again Beans. 14 degrees outside means 39 degrees inside the car after 2 hours.
Wouldn’t full sun, partial sun, shade play a significant role?
You’d assume so, Buddy. I’m no scientist but it stands to reason that a substance like polyurethane would degrade after a while. Especially if heat exposure is a factor.
I’ve only surfed with Iggs a couple of times. But he seemed to have a few boards in the back of the Ford wagon. 😂
I had a board from Firko up here when I was commuting from Sydney every week and I left it in my QLD car. Board was fucked after a few months. People know not to leave boards in cars for too long but surely there could be an impact on the leggie?
I’m just surmising. We should defer to Beans though. He’s got all the answers.

I understand that the polyester resin and catalyst chemical reactions never stop and are speeded up by sunlight, hence the degradation. Epoxy not so much at all.

100%. However Leg ropes are made out of a thermoplastic as far as I know. I have seen someone weld one that snapped back together after it snapped by heating the two bits with a lighter. He was an Industrial Designer but what would he know.

Hatchie was saying his leggiesnapped after having it for a relatively short period this winter. Not sitting in his car for months in the middle of summer. More likely the 6-8 ft surf snapped it rather than sitting in the car.

Having spent most of my working life first in the plastics industry then tyres, I thought I might look up beanies "thermoplastic".
He's probably right. Heat may not have a terribly detrimental effect.
Repeated stretching and rebounding probably would.
And yes, you could "weld" a broken one. But I'd cut the two ends at an angle to give better contact.

Yep, I think the material is used as filament for 3D Printing as well. I wouldn’t be testing the leggie in 6-8ft surf after heat welding it but in emergency situations it’s worth a try.

what are your thoughts on legrope length fellas?

Same as the length of the board generally speaking. I use a thigh strap on my mal.

Thigh strap ?

Not a below knee strap?

But yeh al, 6ft strap for boards about 5’10-6’10 scale up and down a foot each way you go.

If you’re longboarding and want to hang 10 strap needs to go at least to the nose. Most people who can hang 10 don’t wear a strap though :)

Thigh/ below knee same same. Most people around here can’t hang ten anyway and apart from the Nth Coast hipsters most responsible mal riders wear leggies.

A bit like ambient temperatures in a car Beans?

For some reason I always thought the thigh was above the knee.
Oh well.

I like my legropes significantly longer than most. Scared of spring-back. Was surprised to hear Iggy ordered a 6' one, then remembered he has longish arms and thought perhaps they'd make up for it. Interesting to think of all the different surfers of different shapes and sizes using very similarly shaped and sized equipment.
