Looks more balanced there.

If I'm running bigger fronts I like them to be a little more upright.

What exactly is surf culture, Mr Banks ?

Are you the same Jim Banks who recently claimed to have just invented a new bottom contour that has actually been around for decades ?

Is the earth really flat ?

Surf culture thing is 32 minutes in. It's actually pretty good, and a viewpoint not what you might have expected.

Yep. Never thought I’d willingly listen to JB talk for 40 minutes but that was great.

Yes, it was pretty good. I wondered if he was referring to Cranked when talking about hanging out with friends and not needing a great deal of wealth

I (scantly) remember those days at 'nulla hanging with him. I'm sure my mate from those days who I'm reconnected with will recount more stories of our times then than I.

We left our boards in that garage of his as we'd trecked by train there every weekend in our early teens.

Sat on the shoulder of heaving Point surf with him, saw him edge in closer to the older crew, watched him conquer Shark Island from the channel, we were there that day in '74 when he jagged a monster.

Huge respect, and I think he's every bit entitled to have those "outlier views" some have eschewed - by way of calling him a 'conspiritard' or whatevs - because, well, what's the truth?

Most enjoyable, thanks.

The change in "surf culture" was inevitable as generational perceptions changed how it was viewed.

Timothy Leary might have been correct when he stated the much quoted lines:

"Surfers are the ‘throw-aheads’ of mankind, not the dregs; they aren’t the black sheep of humanity, but the futurists and they are leading the way to where man ultimately wants to be. The act of the ride is the epitome of ‘be here now’, and the tube ride is the most acute form of that. Which is: your future is right ahead of you, the past is exploding behind you, your wake is disappearing, your footprints are washed from the sand. It’s a non-productive, non-depletive act that’s done purely for the value of the dance itself. And that is the destiny of man"

You'd be fucken crazy if you didn't want a bit of that.

Banksy even said it in the interview "nothing gives me as much joy as surfing" ... the secret is out, and everyone wants in.

For all Jim's faults and failures (and we all have plenty of these) his commitment to the life and culture of surfing has been straight and true.

Interesting rant. Everyone else went to bed early so I watched it. Generally agree about surf culture. Not to mention everyone spinning out on smack. The old Kingscliff Board Riders basically disintegrated in similar fashion.

Here we go. Strap in (or on).

“The World Surf League reportedly announced that it’s adopting the International Surfing Association’s (ISA) transgender policy for all of its tours.

The change is apparently taking effect immediately.

One of the key changes is as follows: “A surfer assigned male at birth who identifies as a woman and has woman/female on her national identity card or passport is eligible to compete in a men’s event or as a man in a mixed event if she has not met the requirements to compete in a woman’s event (such as maintaining testosterone level less than 5 nmol/l continuously for the previous 12 months).”

In addition, “A surfer assigned male at birth who identifies as a woman and has man/male or ‘other’ or ‘X’ on their national identity card or passport is eligible to compete in a men’s event or as a man in a mixed event,” as the ISA also says on its website.”

Bethany Hamilton has already said she will refuse to compete against a transgender surfer. Wonder who else will step up.

World Swimming had a vote last year and continues to ban trans athletes from competing in women’s events.
World Athletics now use the less than 5 nanomoles/l rule (for previous 6 months).
The Olympics used to have a less than 10 nanomoles/l rule, but I think they are now leaving it up to national bodies.
