Why are they doing it then?
Are they a not-for-profit organisation, doing it for the benefit of.....?.?

Re: The Outsider
Well as I said, I don’t care about them, it’s all the fringe dwellers being pulled along in the wake. The well known big wave photog selling out his home state “respectfully”
The well known local selling out his home breaks and state to get his son’s career off the ground. The well known big wave goofy from WA who got moved on from a certain break “Hey, I gotta make a living”. Apparently a job was off the cards.
The visiting “names” with their camera crew in tow for a lightning visit from the east coast based on swell predictions.
Nobody living the surfing lifestyle here wants that here, most work very low paying rural jobs in exchange for the lifestyle.
The slow motion erosion, by grubs.

Re: The Outsider
Kelly showed up with his entourage, was politely asked not to film and was happy to just surf.
He was welcomed and shown the same friendly reception as every travelling surfer gets, contrary to myth. Just don't be a cnut.

wsl are the real terrorists. osama doesn't surf, he rides a sup and has a marketing degree.
Re: The Outsider
he looked bigger in 'to kill a mockingbird", although maybe that was because he was lumbering around and towering over the kids

as far as I can tell, Dirk Ziff sees himself as a kind of philanthropist in the surfing milieu - a kind of benefactormarauding mullet wrote: ↑Tue Feb 09, 2021 1:30 pmWhy are they doing it then?

I don't know this mind you, since I'm not really on the inside of any of it, I'm just relying on what other people who are on the inside are telling me about the Ziffs
My own gut feeling is that he is yet another -- if by far the most well heeled and generous -- rich person suckered in to chucking money at famous surfers. There is a long history of this in surfing, going waaaay back to the beginning of the 20th century and cascading through all sorts of forms and structures, but peaking I think with the WSL machine.

Re: The Outsider
Osama doesn't do much at all these days. Most SUP riders have a heavier build too. Sort of like Toad of Toad Hall or all those amusing frog statues they used to make in Bali.crabmeat thompson wrote: ↑Wed Feb 10, 2021 4:14 pmwsl are the real terrorists. osama doesn't surf, he rides a sup and has a marketing degree.

That does ring true though Nick and explains a lot. Any losses are probably write-offs against other profits in any case.Nick Carroll wrote: ↑Wed Feb 10, 2021 7:18 pmas far as I can tell, Dirk Ziff sees himself as a kind of philanthropist in the surfing milieu - a kind of benefactormarauding mullet wrote: ↑Tue Feb 09, 2021 1:30 pmWhy are they doing it then?

Re: The Outsider
Following on from Nicks "won't someone think of the kids" view.....
had a surf at the Point with my son this arvo after school and then we went to this NRL thing.
Freddie Fittler, James Tedesco, Boyd Cordner, Victor Radley ....all playing touch with the kids on the beach then giving out footballs, photos etc etc.
Hundreds of kids all on the beach stoked out of their minds.
It made me think that if Starkey hadn't been so arrogant, lazy or incompetent and tried to stick in dry up the arse of the Lennox rec surfing community and had actually tried a little star power on the kids then he might have got a different reception.
Instead of trying go go through the backdoor all secret squirrel.
