Re: Where did you surf today ?
Sure did Lucky Al! Once that storm cell passed, the water was a deep green/blue, the crowd at *regional classic nor-east loving reef* (packed alllll day) had departed leaving just myself and 4 others to enjoy the languid, chest to head-high sets coming through. I didn't have a lot of time, what with sorting out dinner for the children etc, but I had one of those great sessions where the light seemed to soften, and the horizon blended with the swells coming in.

I’m a bit like that with my Carver. I keep thinking about getting a midlength but really nothing goes much better than this old minimal. Maybe I should spray over the big M.steve shearer wrote: ↑Sun Oct 03, 2021 3:44 pmdon't be.

Got my fish for $80 off an Irish backpacker. Had some of the best waves in the last Twenty Years on it.
Went down for a semi late about 3:00. Not that crowded as I kind of predicted. Grand Final Day and all. Plenty of people on the beach and in the park. Scored four set waves. Long wait for the last one but it was a bit of a bomb. The rip is gouging a decent trench out of the beach.

Tend to agree, Steve. Those boards like most “midlengths” work really well up to a point. That point is the point when you decided to buy a midlength.steve shearer wrote: ↑Sun Oct 03, 2021 7:18 pmNo one has really improved on the Carver.Beanpole wrote: ↑Sun Oct 03, 2021 6:00 pmI’m a bit like that with my Carver. Re: Where did you surf today ?
Well let’s face it. If you want a high performance board you aren’t looking for a mid length.

At one stage I had 7', 7'6 and 8' Surftech Carvers. That was when I was a Roti regular (which lasted for around 6-8 years).Beanpole wrote: ↑Sun Oct 03, 2021 8:28 pmTend to agree, Steve. In the end though, for me they didn't have the all round performance of the McCoys, no matter what you did there was a limit on how tight you could carve a turn and how fast they could go.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
Kind of my point. All those boards the seventies guys made ended up working extremely well within specific limitations. They are reliable and perform basic manoeuvres really well. The long twins and channel bottoms seem to up that a notch but still work within those parameters.
I’ve tried a fair few different boards and spent a bit of dosh on some that were disastrous. Sounds like you have done the same thing on probably a larger scale, Cranky. I’ve got about three shapers that I feel confident with. Pretty keen on Billy Tolhurst shapes.

Managed to get a park on my second run through this morning. Somehow managed to snare a few bombs through the crowd.

Nice little banks at the moment and the crowds are down. Got the feel like lockdown is lifting. However there’s still plenty of kooks on foamies who seem to think because they have learned to stand up they can become apex predators for every set wave. They don’t seem to get the concept of dropping in but have mastered the art of falling off in front of you.
