Re: Where did you surf today ?
pearling is an old-timey term, probably californian.
surfed fingal point this morning.
blech. pretty wild, bigger sectiony sets. paddled out on the wrong damn board that wouldn't fit in the pocket.
water was beautiful though, and sharky as always. tuna busting up baitfish briefly in front off the causeway.

i guess i picked it up in the 70s. i've often wondered about the origin of the term. maybe it's short for pearl diving...as in going underwater.el rancho wrote:pearling is an old-timey term, probably californian....
i started repairing my other board this morning...i've cut back the damaged fibreglass and ready to fill the gash in with that sun cure bog. but i can't find any glass matting in my toolbox. so it's not going to be finished today.

Right you are PP. It's definitely short for pearl diving.
As opposed to Lobster diving which is usually executed mid ride from the top of the wave.

Clean and very hollow.
Didn't make any of the barrels but spent enough time inside one to get passed by the spit and then the foam ball - kept me buzzing the rest of the day
yeah if it's that same stretch of beach from that photo I posted up in the weather thread ... there's a few banks right up and down that stretch, huh?
heapppppppps of fish and no doubt bigger fish too. lol

Doesn't matter, somebody believes me or not. I did it for me. But I dont know, why i did it. Maybe i m a little bit mad. But i tried pipeline 4-5 ft today. I didnt surfed, just paddle out. Too scared to surf to tried to catch a wave. And I didn't surfed the last 6 months in Germany. But I was a such great feeling over this waves. Just for 15 Minutes. Then i thought i risked enough...Maybe Pipeline is not the best way to start again after 6 Months

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.

Kids are cool, it's Japanese that descend in a pack that destroy the vibe.
Timing my sessions works for me though.
Swell hasn't hit yet, but it's been building a little. Maybe late arvo with the incoming tide. Hopefully the wind drops around then too.

Well I know of two birds (one South African, the other Euro) who have hired surf guides in Bali. Didn't see it in person but that's what they told me.

I'm talking about the boatloads who show up at a break everybody else paddles out to, and then the local surf guide uses his 'local' status to muscle others out and let the chumps take off on the shoulder
what's worse is when they are actually competent surfers so why don't they just act normal like everybody else?
instant vibe killer

Re: Where did you surf today ?
Ah, ok. That kind of "guide". The ones I was thinking of were proper guides, part driver, part local knowledge. I think the birds hired them so they could be driven around instead of organising their own transport and given some knowledge about where to paddle out, how the break works, hazards to watch for, etc. Definitely not so that they could muscle in on waves.el rancho wrote:petulance wrote:Well I know of two birds (one South African, the other Euro) who have hired surf guides in Bali.
