Surf in Torres Straight Islands?

Post by macgreggor » Thu Feb 21, 2008 12:50 pm

May be heading to the Thursday Island for an extended period. Does anyone know of the surf potential of either the Coral Sea reefs or Arafura Sea. Whilst the appeal of chasing giant trevally and Barra is too good to resist a few months at a time without waves will be a test. Any info will be greatly appreciated.Cheers.

Part of the attraction with this one is the cultural and island lifestyle. Need to surf though and will have access to good boats?

Salties????

people surf on the reefs outside port moresby, which would catch the same swell as Torres Straight. The eastern islands of Torres straight should get swell. SE trades would blow it out early for most of the year though.

OK yupla,

Talk to Leo Akee. He's a TSI naval oficer reservist and will have the guts on hydrographics etc. I know him when I worked for ATSI Arts Board when he was a Board member 1999-2001. Otherwise Alik Tipoti now on the Board.
Maybe if on Badu (Kubin community) then Dennis Nona or Billy Missi but Badu is very close to New Guinea. Maybe the eastern group (Meriam/ Mer) might pull more swell but ask Leo.

I'll PM you my details for reference.
