And then there's the UV factor causing plastics to go brittle

Re: Where did you surf today ?
I've been using zip ties in the garden for years, carrying decent weight. Sunshine, rain, UV. Never had a failure.
You know they come in different sizes don't you?

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.

Ability to carry weight and the ability to withstand shearing force are two different things.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
my son tried the same thing last week. Same result.
It's funny that you could think that no one would have worked it out before if it worked.....but any
things possible.
Most of the manouvres people do in the surf weren't done before because no one thought of them.

The primary system is still the normal loop. The zip tie only has to handle one not of the loop breaks.

No shit Sherlock.
But UV damage was mentioned.
Plastic rope used in the same situation, deteriorates in a year or so. And breaks. The zip ties don't.

Well. Not totally.saltman wrote: ↑Wed Nov 14, 2018 10:47 pmSo it only has to work under situations of extreme sheer forceTrev wrote: ↑Wed Nov 14, 2018 10:13 pmEveryone seems to have overlooked the fact that I'm using it as a backup.Beanpole wrote: ↑Wed Nov 14, 2018 9:58 pmmy son tried the same thing last week. that caused the proven tie to fail?
The loops rarely fail.
And in the half dozen or so instances I've seen or heard about, that has happened due to the loop being old. The ravages of age don't seem obvious to the naked eye though.
BTW. I saw a guy out on a SUP a while ago using two legropes.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
Umm I know this seems amazing but people have been double looping ties as backup in big surf for many many years now.
Even going so far as to have double plugs!!

Re: Where did you surf today ?
Double pluggers ... wow surfing in thongs would be difficult, although I suppose lots of girls do.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
Just buy a couple of metres of high quality marine rope, its vastly superior. I have some 4mm stuff thats rated for 275kg
Thats nearly four realsurfers dangling over a cliff supported by a 4mm bit of twine. Should be adequate for your surfboard.
When everthing else is long gone you'll still have that leggie string

What are you worried about Trev, a tough old piece of leather like you wouldn't be very appealing to a shark

Yeah they pull around 250-300 tiger sharks off buoys and nets each year in Qld, it's not like there is a lack of 'em

Ironically the other day when swimming in after my board, not once did shark cross my mind.
There's a bunch of kayakers go out at Moffs every morning, to fish the reefs a couple of ks offshore.
From the pics this wasn't an exercise kayak. You can bet the craft stunk of previous catches and that's why the shark snapped at it.
