Filipe was better in the final. Julian could have won it on his second last wave but he fell. That wave had the extra size that was required for an excellent score but he fluffed it. The wave after that where he claimed and gave the finger to the Brazzo crowd was never gonna get the score required.
They should keep a comp at Burleigh. It was wet and muddy on the grass but it’s definitely a great place to watch a surf boarding contest.

Jimmy, Filipe’s two turn 9 seemed a ridiculous over score on screen. Did it look more legit in the real world?

No it didn’t Foamy. But the judges have history when it comes to evening up scores when they might have underscored on previous waves. Toledos barrel wave was underscored IMO.

That is the most logical perspective.

I didn’t think Toledo’s barrel wave was underscored.
Nice barrel but not incredible, then massive turn but on a small section so no big risk. I would have thrown an 8 at it.

I’d never disagree with you, Buddy. You’re close to the sanest person on here.
But I will say that I watch most heats this morning on the Tele and it was a very different perspective when I went down for the semis and on.

On screen it looked like 2-3 max. Down there it looked more 3-5. I reckon the judges were looking for combo waves. Either a few turns and an air. Or a few turns then barrel.

I thought the comp was great. Much more atmosphere and history than Snapper. Great comeback stories for the two men’s finalists. Crowd seemed to love it. Highlight was Parko.

I always feel like you’re trolling me when you say things like that about me 🤣

It’s a subjective sport so we can all have an opinion.
I thought the first two decent scores of both surfers could have gone either way to which was better. Judges gave Fil the nod for both. The barrel wave while I said 8, no complaints about it being an 8.53.
The 9.07 though, in the context of all the waves surfed that heat, I just can’t see it. 7.5-8 max.

I don’t like the idea of making up for an under/overscore.
I know they do it though, and have said as such.

+1 beans

But Snapper is much more convenient for me, distance and parking wise.
Think of the parking, please.

On land, Burleigh is not so charming, but in the water it is a more picturesque spot which makes a surprisingly huge difference in the enjoyment of a comp online.

It bugs me when they do two turns and an air on a closeout and get 7.7 or 8. Particularly at somewhere like Burleigh.
Burleigh fine as a venue. Natural amphitheatre and you’ve got the National Park.
Agreed…parking is a problem.

Why do the air when the two turns can get you a 9?

Snapper had a bit of a tube fest going down today.
They actually could have got the comp done, starting today then next 3 days were in the waiting period.

A few of the chicks would have got found out in a behind the rock or bust comp.

Snapper is also a "natural amphitheater" and when they can pump sand to groom the bank, its a far superior wave to Burleigh.

Flips contentious wave should have been scored somewhere in the 8's ... whether it was low, mid or high 8's is the grey area, but it would have to be an 8.88 minimum to give Toledo the win. Was it better than Julians 8.80, thats the question and the answer is NO.
