But you can't dispute this until you try one so you'll just have to wonder, Steve.
Maybe there's something better than yammie.

Brand new matuse yammy 4/3

I’m kind of borderline medium and large short on the matuse size guide.

Same concept as Medium/Short.

Medium standard human body, hobbit legs.

But in Large

I had a Matuse, great suit. Super warm and really flexible. Only problem was the longevity was crap, the tape on the seams fell away quickly. Id be interested to see if quality has improved.

The website and people online reckon that model should last 4 seasons.

If I bought it though it would only get 1-2x max use a year if I go down south.

I use a 4/3 a few times a year here, for dawnies and diving.

I’ve always found the 3/2 sufficient for Sth Oz, with the caveat that booties and sometimes a hood are a necessity during winter.
It has to be a good 3/2 though, good seams and zero neck flushing. The sea temp here reaches a max of 18 in summer, which would be your minimum I reckon.

Depends how you surf. I like to sit out for hours and cherry pick. Whereas groms and some of my mates will go for an hour and sit on the inside and paddle for everything like they're in a heat. In theory I need more rubber than the comp groms, although I generally do ok with a quality 3/2 + hood + booties depending on the weather.

Once I put booties on the first time during winter I wear them until the end of winter though. You have to get used to them and not chop and change

When I lived in Newcastle I never owned anything thicker than 2mm.
We’re all different though, there’s always someone paddling around out there in just boardies. I’m looking at you buddy.

Nah, I wear a 2mm here.
Been wearing the short arm for the earlies and boardies with wetty top any other time at the moment.
Sometimes I’ll wear boardies only mid winter when going for a short high energy surf. Like if I have a 30 min window before work. Gets ya going.
That bloke that owns Slimes in Newy (Mick Adam) apparently is always in just boardies, might be who you’d see.
And I used to see a guy out at winki (VIC) in just boardies a fair bit back in the day.

Yeah, I'll surf boardies here no worries in winter.

This is for winter dawnies when it's slow and air temp is 2 or 3 degrees and below zero with wind chill.

Nothing to do with water temp.

I only bought my first springy when I moved to Newcastle. Before that it was just a sleeveless vest in Winter. Can’t actually remember the first steamer I bought.

Our coldest water temps last year were in December. They are usually in Spring sometime.
