South-mid Maroubra. Picked off plenty of sets, constant 4-5 with some solid 6 footers hitting the middle bank. Lots of driving off the high line to make the first sections, then turns and connecting all the way through to the beach. Some of the best and longest beach break waves I’ve had in a while. I was rolling in deep and early on the middie. It certainly holds its own in size.
Re: Where did you surf today ?
Aj will take a dim view of that. He was with me getting frustrated out at Thommos, then The Farm!
Re: Where did you surf today ?
Thomnos wouldn’t have liked the underlying south groundswell much i gather.
How was the farm? That middle peak would’ve been the tits depending on what time/tide you hit it.

These two boards are going really well for me:
7' Aloha 2+1 (setup as a thruster)
7'4" Tolhurst Thruster/Quad (setup as a thruster)
Both fast and easy to throw into anything you want them to do. The Aloha duck dives pretty well, the Tolhurst not so good.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
Surf has been pretty uncrowded for the last week, often just 4 or 5 on a peak.
Nothing big, just waist to head high, with the odd bigger sets that come and go.
The first few weeks were big and crowded. I just couldn't dial in the boards so found it hard to get waves in the tightly packed crowds.
Usually perfect glassy conditions with a light offshore now.
I might extend my stay until mid November if this keeps up.

Both look good. Is theTolhurst a MOE?
You don’t like it as a Quad.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
Yep, the Tolhurst is a MOE. It's light, fast and turns on a dime, rides more like a shorthand than a mid-length. But the 7' Aloha is even better.
For me they were initially just a path to two other more short boad style boards that I have, a 6'6 and a 7', but the Aloha is fine for me and I'll happily stay with it if I find the shorter boards a step to far for me - I am nearly 72
I haven't ridden the Tolhurst as a quad. I intended to swap it over today.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
I’ve looked at that model I think.
Is it an Ecoskin?
Cheaper than the MOE.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
My MOE is second hand, $750. They go for $1,250 I hear.
Yeah, Ecoskin, $850 new. Fantastic construction, I keep bashing my boards on the rocky cliff face as I ascend/descend for a surf. The heavily glassed McCoys have dings all over them (fcuking fibreglass just shatters), every time I hear the crunch of the Aloha hitting the rock I cringe, but it's the rock that gets damaged, not a single mark on the board. The Tolhurst is in between.
And oh, the MOE has a one foot long crack on the rail courtesy of the baggage handlers, the Aloha, which was in the same bag, was unmarked.

Giving the surf a miss. Bondi is one big rippy mess. Bronte also. Water dodgy.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
Here's an interesting take on where to surf.Bumped into the true blue French owner of Rock 'n Reef. We were talking about the early wet season. He said he didn't care as he's spent the last 12 years in PNG during the wet season and loves it.
And for all that time, there's just been he and the co-owner there surfing!
He wouldn't tell me where it was.

I remember reading about honchos from one of the major surf brands cruising around the Pacific side of Indonesia. Lots of waves up on Papuas north coast.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
Yeah, I've been aware of the various locations, but jeez, 12 years in a row and no other surfers.
It also sounds a bit too primitive especially when there's a lot of evil malaria that can kill within a couple of days and he did flag that as a problem.

My wife friend who’s a Marine Biologist got Cerebral Malaria. Could have killed her.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
Unpromising today but thought I would get some exercise. After floundering around for a while I drifted over to the little reforming rip bowl and snared a few. Thought my board was going to snap when I bailed on a couple of close outs. Really breaking hard on the big ones.
