Foot straps on surfboards

I'm thinking of attaching foot straps to an old 6' 6" Thruster so we can muck around and try some skurfing and see where it takes us. Any one got any ideas?
Do they glue onto the deck, glass them like an FCS plug or bolt through to the bottom?
Should I be thinking about going purpose shaped, or maybe do that down the track?
Any hints on riding appreciated also, I'm fully green on this gig.
