As Irsa said foot or so bigger. I started on a 7'6" board. gradually got smaller to a 6'4" went back to a 7'6" and 7'1" strangely enough for about 6 months, then back to a 6'8". Going back to a bigger board actually improved my surfing then when I went back to the 6'8" my performance really improved...

have a go, you've got an interest and passion mm so just start out small and it will decide for you wether it's for you or not. as you get older your earnings will grow with your passion and you'll update your equipment as you naturally get better.
