I too have become a big fan of Future Fins. I was initially supplied (by Jim Banks) with JCs for those bigger days where I need speed in a straight line and I swap these down to EAs if I want to feel looser and/or cut back more than once. I recently bought some Vector II 3/2s (with the hatchet centr...

And one more tip: getting onto a smaller board will also help your fitness (once you get used to it) because paddling an 8'2" Mal isn't really exercise.

FYI: I am about your age (53) and closer to your previous weight (90kg) - I currently surf a 6'5" board.

Re: Take Offs

The board seems too far down the face of the wave when I start to stand up. ... then you are too slow. 1. surf as much as possible - for as long as possible per session 2. do pushups - in the order of a few hundred a day (in sets of say 25) 3. do pushups and clap your hands on the upstroke As soon ...

I bought a RipCurl steamer years ago and after about 4 months the rubber gave way at the base of the zipper. RipCurl first repaired it, then when it tore again gave me a new wetsuit (next year's model) and I was impressed. That wetsuit lasted two years and then the seams started to fall apart - RipC...

Am I the only one who detects a PR blitz with this latest Bra Boys "event"? No quote from the "victims"? But quotes from and hero worship of the bra boys. Talk about rewriting a press release without checking sources. My bet is there is a DVD/movie/product of some kind about to be released and that ...

What would you do? I'd go anyway but I would stay away from the "tourist" areas, especially after business hours. The safest place would be in the water, so maybe this is the excuse for your perfect holiday ;-) I certainly wouldn't hang around the airport, major hotels, transport hubs, bridges, rel...

Re: First time trip to Bali

1. Whats the best thing to do with money over there? Can I use my commbank savings card? Even credit card? Use your cards (bank or credit) with Cirrus and take money out of ATMs -also agree R300,000 at a time would be safe. There are of course charges but compared with cash and money changers it is...

Dropping in on guys like that never works. He just gets more determined to steal everything. I believe it works better to paddle inside the guy, so he's forced to go inside you again, and eventually nudge him so far off the spot that he gets the message. I agree 100% - dropping in on them can poten...

That figures. The paranoid in me really didn't want to think a satellite could resolve that level of detail - I can see my clothes on the line in my back yard!

In the past (same technology as modern, less expensive wetsuits) I have torn wetsuits that were too small just paddling around, so a snug fit only would be my recommendation, and make sure the length is your exact length. More recently I have had a series of Rip Curl Elasto and Elasto II sealed 3/2 ...

do you have to pay to get sharp images, or is there a way on the free version? i'm new to google earth, and the images i'm getting are no good. LA: in some places they have great images, some places the images are o.k. and many places a surfer would be interested in the images are poor or non-exist...

Here is Wilkes Passage, Fiji.

Maybe not a huge day but great detail, you can see the surfers (including one poor bastard caught inside) and their boats.

Sea urchin spines are extremely brittle and often break off inside the wound. A sea urchin picker tool can be effective in removing spines. Do not dig around in the skin to fish them out - this risks crushing the spines and making them more difficult to remove. Do not intentionally crush the spines...
