Johnny runs quality trips on Pelagic, Garuda takes boards up to 9'6" on the larger planes, for a gun 6'10' - 7" is perfect.
It sound's a lot quieter in Ments this year from previous years, many people loosing their jobs and staying home.

No idea. It's a mates 40th so we'll let him decide, but I reckon the general consensus is that we'll be happy to sacrifice a little quality for less crowds.saltman wrote:Where are you likely to surf?
I counted 40 heads in the water yesterday at Cronulla point when the rain finally stopped. And it wasn't even that good. It's fkn out of control. Most of the kooks out there sit evenly spread down the line of the wave so even if you are lucky enough to get a set wave, instead of enjoying it you have to play "dodge the bodyboarder/blow in fkn kook". Seriously, just get out of the fkn way or fuck off to the beachy. Geez I didn't even surf yesterday. I sure as hell got the shits just looking at it.
Anyway back to Indo.

Cheers Ken, we were initially going to book the Pelagic, but the Tengirri was a touch cheaper. Garuda looks like it's going to be the easiest and cheapest to get to Padang from sydney. Thanks for the info on the board length.Ken Oath wrote:Johnny runs quality trips on Pelagic, Garuda takes boards up to 9'6" on the larger planes, for a gun 6'10' - 7" is perfect.

An Aussie guy named Phil runs Tenggiri, also a good operation. I don't know what size planes run from Jakarta to Padang, but they have started a new service this year from Jkt to Sibolga with large planes which is great for bringing boards.JET01 wrote:Cheers Ken, we were initially going to book the Pelagic, but the Tengirri was a touch cheaper. Re: What boards DID you take to Indo?
Thought I'd dig up my old Indo board thread.
10 months have passed and now I've got a few new boards.
taking my 6'2 Campbell brothers mini merk bonzer 5
Got a 6'0 x 19 3/4 x 2 5/8 round tail being shaped by PCC as we speak.
3rd board will be either a second hand 6'4-6'6 round tail or I'll take my 6'1 single fin over.

Re: What boards DID you take to Indo?
I surfed 6'4s there last Oct. pumping Keramas ledgy 6 plus with occasional 8ft thumper I was crying my eyes out I didn't have a 6'10 or similar. Take a step up just for confidence alone
Re: What boards DID you take to Indo?
You always wish you bought a longer board, rarely do you wish you bought a shorter one.
Re: What boards DID you take to Indo?
3 days before I went to the Ments I scored a sick second hand 7ft board. Local shaper, very similar to a black beauty in perfect nick for $200.
Got 3 of the biggest waves I could ever have hoped. Definitely worth the $200.

6'4, 6'6, 7' in the off-season, 6'6, 7', 7'6 when its on. The bigger boards get used about half the time. I use lots of volume 43 - 58l, but I am very old and decrepit

Re: What boards DID you take to Indo?
all kinds...
I would chose paddle-ability above duck-dive ability, plenty of times the paddleability will help when you are scrambling to the horizon and sprinting for position. Also plenty of situations where you can't hope to duckdive 2 stories of whitewater, so just hug your board and take your medicine, after a while you start to see the funny side
one of the best sessions I ever had I was on flat rockered 6'6 summertime board, it felt a bit squirelly near the end of the session, got back on the boat, missing a fin... my point is, it doesn't really matter what board you have, you know the waves will deliver.
these days I take a step up 6'10 x 19 x1/4 x2 5/8 custom mini-gun and my 6'6 shortboard - 32.5L, I am 87kg
The gun is fun from 5-8ft, any bigger than that and you start wishing for more paddle power. I reckon you would be nuts to go to Indo and not have the equipment to ride bigger waves. The shape improves and crowds decrease above 5ft.
Agreed, a bit of length is always good.

Re: What boards DID you take to Indo?
Totally agree on the 5ft and crowd getting much smaller
