Yeah it sold fast. I wasn't that upset.

I just watched The Yin and Yang of Gerry Lopez and it seemed fateful that it popped up.

Some epic footage in it, anyone else checked it out?

no, is it worth it?

I got the impression it was a bland piece of hero worship.

Not interested at all.

I wanted to see it at The Ritz, but couldn't make it.

Well, yeah. It is, I guess. I didn’t know the full Lopez story, so it was good to join the dots. The footage is amazing, of course- reeling Desert Point, Pipe etc.

But for sure, it has a big dose of classic American cheese as well. Not as bad as some other surf films though.

Skip, my cuz has a subscription to Surfers Journal, gave me his login. I’m not sure if it is streaming yet

I've just got less and less interested in Lopez as I've got older and realised this is probably another grinning hippy capitalist with impeccable timing.

Can't stomach the spiritual cloak these people clothe themselves in and present as fact to the outside (often adoring) world.

He also seems, almost uniquely, unaware and inarticulate, about his path.

Which also leads me to believe he's just a massive conman.

Is what I'm saying unfair Wyre?

Steve, is it true that Gerry said to you that he thought you’d be taller?

No, that was Shaun Tomson.

Who, I might add was the same size or slightly shorter.

He seems fairly articulate. But yeah I hear ya, impeccable timing both in the water and out- right place, right time. Monetised.

The spiritual cloak is definitely there, but not too pushed in this- apart from the whole yin/yang thing, which is hinted at in the title

I don’t think Gerry’s 2 hours of yoga a day is faked for his brand. I also don’t think moving to Bend, Oregon was some canny commercial strategy. Nor the months he used to spend in G-Land without a camera crew.

Yeah, I thought he hit surfing fame and commercialism at a sweet spot in its development and managed to leverage a lifestyle of his choosing out of it.

Speaking of massive conmen, Steve, have you watched The Magnitsky Act - Behind the Scenes? If you haven't, allow me to highly recommend. Takes you to the Ziff brothers as well.

Nice clip of surfing 1975-85 posted on YT by one of the Webber brothers.

Greg shows some good barrel style out at spookies

https://youtu.be/I3jYvROCIyE

”Featuring each of the six Webber brothers plus John Adair, Paul Bucknell, Rodney Dahlberg and Wayne Williams. Filmed by Paul Bucknell, John, Greg and Monty Webber. Edited by Monty. The opening waves are of Spookies. Dan's wave is at Flat Rock, filmed by John. Ben's wave is at Spooky Beach. The other waves are Angourie Point, except John's long right-hander, which is at Lennox Head and was filmed by Paul Bucknell. Diving by Mont.”

True.

I was more referring to the shady business deals, the ripping off of Dick Brewer, the voracious hassling in the line-up, selling out to Costco with soft boards, associations with shady/drug dealers, suppression of documentary film Sea of Darkness which alluded to these associations.

etc etc etc.

No doubt he loves to surf and do Yoga- that is not at issue.
