Big paddle out at Bronte today. Not sure who kicked the bucket but there were about 30 forming a circle on the reef. Clubbies and the local board riders club. A few nearly got cleaned up and about twenty took off on one wave. One clubbies lost the paddle board on the reef.

It’s not only Steve that appreciates hand jive.

From a 1993 Matt Warshaw interview with Wayne Bartholomew

Who were your early style influences?

I always felt an affinity with Miki Dora and Phil Edwards. Especially Dora—it was the hands, the hand jive, the finger English. And the mystique, of course. Dora wasn’t just a phenomenal surfer, but subversive—you didn’t know exactly how to think of him. That inspired me. Later on, Gerry Lopez was an influence. I would stare at photos, stare at Gerry’s fingers, the trail of his fingers along the wave, how he’d caress the wave. Lopez' hands, arms, shoulders were all spot-on; perfect. I said to myself, “There it is. There’s the essence of the whole thing.”

Did that transfer directly to your surfing?

Maybe. Probably. But I think my style didn’t come from imitating anybody. Not Lopez, or Dora, or MP, or anyone else. My style comes from riding Kirra; from feeling my way out of the tube. I did it until it felt perfect, and my hands, my style—that’s the result.

A few shark sirens to start the week. Obligatory beach closure for 1 hour.

So a tagged shark swims within a certain distance of the detector, alarm is triggered and the life guards close the beach. A complete pain in the arse for the life guards. Apparently there is talk of raising the alarm to 5 detections for the same shark before the alarm is tripped. Thoughts?

There's detectors and automated sirens, drones and nets (at some beaches). Pure politics at play.

Note I was told (cannot be substantiated by me) that approx. 20% of significant sized sharks are tagged. I haven't a clue if that's true.

Ok.

It may be a reasonable guess.

Was hanging out with Banksy, he reckons his surfing has had a new lease of life lately.

He's gone short, 5'10" twinny, and is loving it, even in the big stuff. And always low volume, and he's a big guy.

Said he paddled for a double overhead set wave, what the fuck am I doing he told himself, halfway down the face, it's pitching, and he's still paddling, takes the drop and the board connects perfectly, barrelled, but kicks out too early, gets dragged up the face and then gets pitched onto the reef, arse first thank god as he hits the reef hard.

Two weeks recuperating.

That should give him plenty of time to tidy up the edges of his conspiracy theories.

That is sweet looking. I wonder it that shape would go well so short though. Might just be flat and fast in a straight line.
