Note a big lad won the long boarding comp. it’s pretty clear long boarding is the pragmatic choice for the person over 90 kilos

Now, now. The ability to use a bit of grunt appeared necessary in those windy conditions. Half the competitors were getting blown off the waves.

Re: Just general surfing stuff
Imagine a world where shortboards never existed. An alternative universe where the Germans had won WWI and WWII, people like Donald Trump never existed and only Longboarding was allowed in German built wave pools in land locked environments away from the ocean. Three fins were seen as a direct insult to the ethos of wave pool longboarding and those who dared attempt surf these incarnations in the ocean where beheaded in town squares below Hitlers gaze. Who would have the courage surf these 3 fuin monstrosities. Who? (or is it whom?)
Meanwhile in real town 2043. The oceans are polluted and wave pools are the only outlet for surfers but because demand is now so high only the mega rich can afford to surf in wave pools.Short boarding is banned because the nouveau rich can’t stand up on anything shorter than 12ft. Occasionally there will be special shows with circus trained short boarders performing in front of hand picked bourgeoisie. They clap softly with an impatient gaze restless that the longboarding show is over 20 minutes away.

To note men and women’s events were won on single fins. Might just be long boarders aren’t trying to ride longboards like short boards. Sort of makes sense.

Style over substance. In the world of throwback boards with modern contours it’s interesting to observe style. The older you get there seems to be a yearning for flow, smooth lines, meandering. Not just surfing, pretty much everything,
Shortboard surfing is rude, abrupt and a bit of punch in the face.
I like to look at both, do both. The thing that kills me about shortboard surfing is the stance. Pros and very good shortboarders
are coiled like tight springs, they let go, BAM!!, then assume the position, BAM!! It’s incredibly athletic. For most though we look all hunched over, knees half bent and flailing along like a drunk simian man. It’s shit.
I’ve been watching some older surfing on longer shortboards and it just looks nice, real nice. But I’m old.

Agreed Thud.
For me it's always been about the flow.
To me short boarders are more like gymnasts. As you say, incredibly athletic.
But then, I'm REALLY old.

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.

Re: Just general surfing stuff
For a long time now I've viewed surfing as like skiing. My body moves up and down. As it moves up I weight one edge of the board and it turns, as my extension stops and I drop the rail is unweighted and I change to the other rail.
So there is a rhythm of continual extension and compression of the body as you change from rail to rail.
I use the same technique of weighting and unweighting, compression and extension, when I'm riding a mountain bike through a series of turns
The unweighting can be either at an up or down moment in the movement of your body. Down unweighting is quicker.
I first learnt this in "How to Ski" instruction books and have not seen or heard or read it anywhere else. It can be a graceful and flowing motion.

And oh, IMO you can see the old style surfing where turning is done by just sort of leaning with no compression/extension - to me it often looks awkward and lacks rhythm and style

Re: Just general surfing stuff
I’m talking more Tom Curren J Bay (he was riding a 7ft plus board) and from an older perspective Jeff Hackman. Not so much thick wobbly long single fins that require perfection to look awesome.
I should add flow and DRIVE.
