Derek Hynd finless at chunky J Bay

Post by Cuttlefish » Sat Sep 11, 2010 8:00 am

Seen footage of him surfing finless at J bay but reckon this must be new.
Such solid waves and have a go at the control he has over the ride...

How's that wave that starts at 2:03! and the way he's stalling at the start of the next one. Incredible.

I saw that Ryan Burch guy surfing finless in San Diego a few times...it blew me away!!!
When he nails those 360/floaters over lip, it looks so seamless. Amazing to watch.

Its a block of closed-cell styrofoam isn't it? No glass, just sealed by setting it on fire and blowing it out quickly...haha

I went out finless today on my 5'7 Kritta and had a ball. The waves were a fat 2ft with plenty of people out, but I surfed in on the shorey with no fins or leash.

It was amazing fun in surf where most people would normally struggle to get a wave that lets you connect 2-3 turns, unless they were riding significant volume like a mal. Changes the focus completely, it was a fresh way to have fun :)

Finless will be a new staple way for me to have fun in crappy waves. Just take the widest board with the most volume, take out all protruding objects and paddled out!

I'm worried about his knees. Surfing in a permanent squat has got to be doing damage.

ok. i'll give my 5'6 kneeboard a go finless. it's wide and thick all right. it was stalling on every wave yesterday. i think for the greater good i'll keep the leash on.

surf it flat, dont try to use the drive from fins and just kin of point it and stand further forward than you usually would ( or kneel ), very challenging but super fun, especially when ya get to a certain level....flatter faced waves are better to start with, especially at take off.... 8)
