But someone might go a flat deck at 2 1/4 vs rolled at 2 1/2 for the same volume.

What's your point?

They've either chosen the flat deck because they like it and want to keep the volume down or the rolled deck because they like it and want to increase the midline volume while still having refined rails.

I'm not saying that volume is the only thing driving design, that's insane. As is saying it's only a result of design decisions.

Yeh I agree.
Except the flat deck increases the overall volume for the same thickness.

And that's why they go thinner with the flat deck...

its a displacement measurement, nothing more.
Correct.

Which is one of the most basic design principles in a surfboard.

But volume is achieved by design decisions ... thickness, width, length, foil, concave and other varying factors all contribute to how much foam is left after shaping. Volume has only really come into the discussion since computerised shaping started spitting out the information. Even then, the desired volume is reached by combining all the other aspects of surfboard design.

As an over-arching measure of displacement and thus how well the board will float you volume is one of the handiest measurements there is for deciding on if a board of any combination of other design principles will work or not.

That is why it has become so ubiquitous- because it's so fcuking useful.

Probably becomes less relevant the higher up in volume you go.
Like, if you’re playing on the borderline of performance and floating you’ll notice if you get it wrong.

It just gives a useable bracket for any given design.

But yeah, as far as flotation goes, becomes less crucial (as you size up) until you get to big wave guns, where the bracket becomes important again.

Most of the worlds top shapers agree that the emphasis on volume is overcooked. Its useful and all, but its bearing on functionality to the individual isn't as important as some would believe. It most definitely helps, just as the measurements of length, width and thickness do. I gave up using volume as a measurement on my boards years ago, it was surplus to my needs. Glassing weight is far more critical to me.

Epoxy boards are floatier at the same volume.

Or you mean EPS foam vs traditional foam blanks

Volume (or displacement) determines flotation.
The only difference in flotation between eps and pu foam is the difference in weight of the foam itself, which won’t amount to much. The rider’s own weight could vary by that much from week to week.

Paddle in for a quick snap and change boards?
