Yeah it was surprisingly good.
Was thinking it might be closer to 20-25 but it really started coming down yesterday evening.
The storm moved north faster than expected too, I was going to go south but changed plans.

Enough snow that I could get off the fire roads and into the woods on some hiking trails.

There's another 30cms on the long range charts. Which probably means rain. But if not I have an objective in mind with some proper angle to it.
Or I might do the quarantine protocol and head over the border.

Went to Blue Knob yesterday, it was the first decent hill I've seen on the east coast.
Did about 20k feet of vertical, until my neighbour took a spill and hurt himself enough to want to head home, but not seriously.

Up to knee deep in the trees, and hardly anyone headed very far off the trails because they don't have powder skis. Got fresh turns on the last run.
Apparently it's the best season in 10 years.

Lots of fallen trees, I think because it's a state park they can't clear timber. Coupled with the low average snowfall it means you have to really pick your lines.

No photos, it was -11 so I kept my gloves on.

Nico Porteous, the 19 years old New Zealand freestyle skier, won the men’s half pipe world champs about 10 days ago.
Here is his winning running run. The feature is his back to back double somersaulting 1620s. One right spinning and the other left spinning. I heard him interviewed. Doing it both directions seemed to be what left him most chuffed. The left spin is his natural spinning direction. He broke his foot skateboarding five weeks before the event.

That just looks silly.

Skis look stupid in the pipe. It's the one part of the mountain where they don't belong.

Got my ski pass and a new board on the way, and it's starting to get cool here.
Looking forward to being able to actually cross borders this winter to hit some east coast hills, and I will see if I can work out of the Salt Lake office for a few weeks in March/April.

I'd be tempted to skin up Alta and just falling leaf the whole thing to scrape all the snow off.

I gather they call the police.
There's been some wicked footage of snowboarders there this week before they open.

I've been to Utah but not the canyons.

Finally got some snow.

Working today, and the wind chill is -23.
Tomorrow is supposed to be just below zero and sunny.

Trying to decide how far I want to drive, and whether to go backcountry or to a resort with no base.
The backcountry area got double what we did, and will get more tonight.

Our Christmas ski trip was a total bust with rain and no base.

One resort, that typically gets over 5m of snow a year, didn't even open.
The other was okay for 1.5 days. Okay as in mashed potatoes, ice and dirt. Worst snow I've ever seen, but because of it nobody was riding the one open 'black run' so I could bomb a few runs.

I was riding a camber board for the first time in 10 years, it was a big adjustment to actually being able to edge into the ice.

Are they going with business as usual at the resorts ‘boo, or are there closures?

It's game on, no limits anymore.
Another vote for backcountry, but there's not really enough base to justify 6 hours of driving.
I'll probably go and scout out a place about an hour away for later in the season and end up skinning.

Unfortunately all the resorts nearby are in Trump country with 40% vaccination rates and 40% Covid positive rates.

And are mostly owned by Vail. Fuck Vail.

They own most of the resorts here too.
