Steve try around Peniche and Baleal in Central Portugal there are heaps of breaks and they can be very good, Baleal has quite surf scene and has surf schools populated by pasty white learner Brits and Germans and northern Europeans but you can snaffle good breaks all around, bit like Byron I guess watch for no clue surf etiquette
The locals all surf well and demand and get respect but if you blend in a it's party central and you'll cop some good invites.
Supertubos Coxos, crazy left, you'll have fun, check Longinus's site :)
Jaffa, I'm opinionated, and I'm sometimes right. So?

Thanks Ot's.

I'm pretty familiar with the surf spots you mentioned....was more after general vibe info, time of year, consistency , food, welcoming of haoles type of thing.
I've surfed with plenty of Portugese in Indo and ususally there not scared so I figured they had some good reefs back home.

I will be in Portugal - Ericeira - from 13 to 20 Oct. Might see you there Steve.

Anybody got the info on fair accommodation?

Pro circus is in Portugal then too. Le's hope they stay up north :-)

Unlucky timing.

Hey Cliff, I have been speaking to a couple of accomodation providers recently. Baleal Rentals looks pretty good. A few other on the maps here as well http://www.surfingatlas.com/division/258 everyone is frightfully excited about the pros coming to town. :D

Ah, could be a good call. I think the area was was easily maxed out for accomodation when the ladies had their event their last year.

Id like to check out the south coast there, head across to the islands as well

Steve, check out Madeira. 8)
Literally a volcano sticking out of the ocean in between Portugal and Africa.
Mrs B was born there, some excellent breaks on offer and stunning scenery.
Well worth a visit.

boo if you can bear it, the magic seaweed forum might be a better place for Spain & Portugal info as they're pretty popular destinations with UK surfers, Morocco too. (I've not been to Portugal, and only fleetingly been into Northern Spain so can't help I'm afraid)

To tell the truth eggs are one thing I avoid buying when I’m grocery shopping. So you may say I’m an intermittent egg buyer who usually lets someone else buy them.

If all other options strike out I'll be sure to, GSTQ, though the stench of middle aged insurance broker is hard to wash off.
I've seen northern Spain surfing options and surfed southern France, very briefly.

I'll be road tripping with family in tow.

edit: I just remembered that I know some local guys in central Portugal, right near some of the best surf, and they promised to block me into some waves

Drove from Lagos to Porto and back a long time ago. Hung out a lot in Ericera and Peniche, and scored loads of waves - obviously. From hazy memory Ericera was a nicer town.
Was later though - November and December, no shortage of swell, and I remember surfing loads of empty beach breaks away from the main areas.
I remember some lovely girls from Madiera that we travelled with for a bit - actually, a trip there or the Azores would be the business. I also remember some great waves at Figuera de foz.
Crowds and the quality of surfing would have changed a fair bit from the mid 90s of course.
Grab a copy of the stormrider guide. Maybe head a bit further north, near the Spanish border and into Spain - Galacia? A bit cooler at least. Although no idea what the waves are like there.

Cheers.
Figueira da foz is where I know people.
I'll figure out when everyone has holidays and try to miss those times. Rough plan at the moment is travelling Seville-Lisbon-Porto-Madrid.

The Euro stormrider guide is a worthwhile investment if you're in those parts looking for waves.

I did a trip from France to Portugal last year in october/november. Plenty of empty spots to match the uber crowds at Mundaka and Supertubes. Random Portugese coastal towns often revealed empty head high beach breaks with plenty of banks and atlantic punch. Winds were pretty favourable, but were sometimes too offshore (easterly gails).

Ha one thing about the food. We were obviously psyched on travelling to the home of Oporto chicken, thinking chicken would be everywhere but found that dried fish and Jamon were far the dominant meat goods. Seafoods good, pastries are good too. Bottles of spirit for $10 euros you can't go wrong.
