Snowboarding like surfing?

Post by Stoked » Mon Jan 23, 2006 9:16 am

I went snowboarding at Sugarbowl, California yesterday. It was my first time but i seemed to pick it up quickly. I noticed obvious similarites to surfing like finding an edge, trimming and the whole sliding motion. Needless to say i spent alot of time on my ass but overall it was a great experience. Most boarders who had experience were simply goin for speed and line, but i found doin big carves with my hand out skimming the surface was much more fun. What have your experiences snowboarding been like?

Boarding on ice is like skating

Boarding on powder is like surfing

Thats the way I see it :!:

and my experiences have been tops  went on a trip to canada a few years ago and boarded about ten different mountains and I've also spent the season down in Thredbo which was hard yakka and definately worth it :!:

And I've gotta to say boarding through the trees in oz is tops  nothing beats it, I think it's the colour or something, it's just so ............................ excellent, dreamy .... theres something about it, pines overseas are just a bit unnerving or something
If it's well engineered it's beautiful .

That was beanpole and YOU .......................

And to help you start the working week, a nice 1m swell running with a light N wind which means that left will be working all day. Very pleasant on the beach for the early this morning. Water warm, glassy and crystal clear and just 3 of the crew out. Will have 3 surfs in by sunset tonight.

Have a good day munch, I am ...................... :D

I reckon the body movements, weight transfers, physical sensations etc are incredibly similar.

And like the other poster said, riding powder is even more similar.

Obviously what isn't the same is the whole snow experience compared to the ocean experience, and that is what takes time to learn - the physical techniques can be picked up relatively quickly.

i went snowboarding for the first time this winter, awsome fun...mind u i was just one of those blokes trying to fly down the slope, regardless of how much control i had :D .
I found it wierd to do turns but cos the weight distribution and movement is a bit different

if anything..snowboarding is more related to skateboarding.
both are practiced on a solid surface, boards are similar shape, use learn to turn..and half the fact that ur strapped into a snowboard

ive only ever tried surfing once, as im a bodyboarder, so i cant really say if snowboarding requires the same skills as surfing, but i am a snowboarder for many years now.

snowboarding in a foot of fresh Snow...at Thredbo... best thing in the world!!! :D

Spent a month in Niseko, Hokkaido couple of years back. It was f#cken awesome!! Seriously if I had the energy I'd paint a poetic image for you, but it rocked my world.....

The people are good value as well - timid when sober cwaaaazy when drunk. This one chick spent a whole night trying to stick her finger up my asss  good times

edit: fawk - i quoted the wrong quote :x and it censored a_ss :?
