I've got a number of them. Can't tell much difference from the big brands, apart from the massive price difference.
The spiel is they are made in the same factory.
North Coast Surf Traders are coming out with a similar line called Free Fall fins. Again, the prices are very attractive.

Has anyone ever received royalties for their board design or construction innovation?

Surftech and Firewire and GSI pay royalties to board designers.

Not sure about fin designers.........The Greenough fin is about the only example I can think of of true intellectual property....other than that, whats the difference between an Al Merrick fin and the thousand other hyper-similar thruster fins that fin foilers have come up with working independently.

Royalties for what exactly?

Tab type? Template?

FCS 1 are off patent aren't they?

FCS 2 are still under patent?

I'm guessing, that Surftech could legally copy a Donald Takayama board, call the copy a unique name, and sell it without royalties or licensing fees. But Surftech want to brand it as a Donald Takayama and that's where fees are incurred.

They are paying for use of the brand name, not so much the design.

well yes, the brand name is the selling point but they are licensing use of the actual design. The shaper/designer send a master shape to Surftech to use as the plug.

So, you are actually getting what is says on the tin, not some no name copy.

The GSI model is a bit more fluid, a bit of licensed designs and then some no name copies.

well the AM2 for instance is an Al Merrick smaller wave fin template, it's long been sold and named as such in both FCS and Futures fin ranges, both those companies pay a royalty to the designer.

Same with YU. Japanese designer whose fin design/s has long been a part of FCS's fin range.

Both are named in the Eclipse range. So yeah they'd wanna be paying a royalty.

I got the AM2s. Got them home and the left and right were quite different to each other in width/foil. They go good but.
