Steve, so you’re contradicting your previous statement on stochastic events.

I’m just asking for some consistent dialogue here mate.

People seem to tie themselves up in knots due to the vagaries of shark behaviour and myriad of scenarios.

It all ends in unsubstantiated opinions for mind.

Alakaboo you’re a scientist. Please feel free to lay out a hook we can try grasp and try to understand.

Shearer DO NOT write a Swellnet article on this please.

Not sure what you want from me thud.

I used to work in a shark sensory ecology lab and I still don't have much of an idea about why sharks do what they do.

The best bait for sharks on the drum lines is shark. Mullet is what most people use, partly because of the greenies (in which group I count myself) have ecological issues with using sharks as bait. Dolphins and turtles eat the bait and federal environmental law makes that an issue.

I'm told that he smart drum lines in the SW were setting of alarms so frequently that the locals began to ignore them.

That was probably the last straw for the trial.

We do now know the broad pattern is following the whale migration, fairly close to the coast, as the tag program and receivers has shown.
That's partly a function of where the receivers are.
And maybe they only put satellite tags on the homebody sharks.
Well yes the young ones at least have a few congregation areas, and some go off to NZ or FNQ or WA, but, broadly speaking.

The attack locations in SW WA surprise me. The times I've surfed Mainbreak, you're a mile out to sea and feel like bait. Places like Lefties feel relatively safe given how close to shore they are.

I guess all the East Coast attacks show that distance from shore means fuck all.

I mean they are stochastic events so no single event could be said to be prevented by this or that measure.

That doesn't imply smart drum lines don't reduce the overall risk profile as well as supply immense amounts of valuable data.

I think they are the best tool we have.

But would they have saved old mate from this terrible fate?

I don't think you can answer that definitively .

Does that make my argument more coherent?

I didn’t think you were arguing old boy.

Just articulating a point.

I was asking innocent questions and drawing naive conclusions. A genuine investigator.

I prefer when you get all Joseph Conrad descriptive like rather than frustrated coastal expert. But, hey. Doesn’t matter. It’s just entertainment.

So me and Bruce.
Re: drum lines, smart bouys, etc. Largely irrelevant to where this guy was swimming. Maroubra and Malabar are about 7 to 10 klm away and around a point from there. Little Bay is small, isolated and one of the only access points on about 12 klm of cliffs leading down to the entrance to Botany Bay. Big drop off.

holy fuq, this thread this past week.

sharks are like people living w Dementia - fr my experience - no 2 are the same.

it's been 13 yrs since I saw the navy diver, hauled up onto the deck of GI in a kharki sling, spewing blood out onto the cement wharf on my morning patrol while working there, and I can never unsee what I saw that fateful Feb morning.

nor push away the weird feels of surfing a couple of hours before the Bondi attack on GO, within that fortnight.

subsequent dreams/nightmares, associations w my surfs in southern Tas at sketchy places, and equally sketchy encounters deckie - ing for my late bro in those same environs where he surfaced ashen faced after a brush w infamy.

i get spooked so easliy nowadays. snorkels, bay swims, they're often consumed w what if, what's that?

so, i'm like, why the righteous rhyme or reason?

According to Dorsal there was a 3mt White Shark at Avalon yesterday at 3:00.

Is Dorsal still based on user-submitted data?

It lost all credibility for mine when sharks started appearing 50km inland in freshwater rivers with no connection to the ocean
