I don’t think Gerry’s 2 hours of yoga a day is faked for his brand. I also don’t think moving to Bend, Oregon was some canny commercial strategy. Nor the months he used to spend in G-Land without a camera crew.
True.

I was more referring to the shady business deals, the ripping off of Dick Brewer, the voracious hassling in the line-up, selling out to Costco with soft boards, associations with shady/drug dealers, suppression of documentary film Sea of Darkness which alluded to these associations.

etc etc etc.

No doubt he loves to surf and do Yoga- that is not at issue.
Looking forward to a warts and all reveal.
I thought Brewer got a fair bit of mileage out of Lopez.
How did he rip him off?

Nice dirt. What’s the story on Brewer?

I'm not sure of the details.

Tim Bonython filmed an interview with Brewer and released it on his death.

Brewer talks about being ripped off by Lopez.

Lopez has been a genius at managing his own image, carefully curated and whitewashed.

He once said he moved to Bend, Oregon because he didn't want his son to grow up in the criminal milieu of the North Shore at the time.

Yeah, but ... is that not similar to Frank Williams claiming to have invented the thruster ?

Simon Anderson gives him credit for being the inspiration (he actually credits 5 people) ... but Williams to this day has stated that if he hadn't got crook, he'd have eventually reached the same point as where Simon did ... #sagrapes.

There's a lot of sour grapes floating around in surf history.

I don't have a problem with Lopez allowing Costco to use his name under license ... after all he has to make bank (as you say) somehow.

Sea of Darkness is a great documentary. I was under the impression that it was someone else who stopped its public circulation, but happy to be corrected.

I remember Nat tried to claim responsibility for the Thruster at one stage.
Brewer has claimed responsibility for everything as has McTavish.
Reno and Lopez used to surf for Brewer.
McCoy has a pretty good claim on pre Thruster design features.
Isn’t Gordon Merchant credited with designing the rolledbottom edge down rail design after Brewer started making down rails?

He was bad but he never stooped so low as to move bread to bottom shelves. That's pure gangsta.

Yep ... McTavish said that Simon saw a 3 fin design drawing hanging in his shaping bay.

Simon credits McCoy as one of the five inspirations ... for his development of the "no-nose" design.

As a school kid, Billy Tolhurst also developed that rail design, independently of other doing the same. Bob Cooper told the story of an American shaper coming out and wondering how this kid had managed to copy him without seeing his design. Bob reassured the Seppo that Billy had indeed developed the design aspect through his own volition. It wasn't Brewer btw. Sometimes things like this happen simultaneously and at the same time. Speaking design aspects with Tolhurst quite some time back, he mentioned that Bic longboards had exactly the same tail rocker as his, not inferring that they had copied him, but more so to do with them coming to the same conclusion.

There's a few fellas around claiming to have invented the Quad ... not sure who get the credit there. I'm kind of thinking that the twinzer is the most likely culprit for the inspiration ... but from there is anyones guess.

I’ve heard Neal Purchase Jr, the nicest bloke on the planet perhaps, say McTavish ripped off designs from his old man.

It’s never ending. You cannot patent curves. Thank god Anderson didn’t patent 3 fins the same size, can you imagine.

Billy mentioned it was a French shaper, not Rooster.

Side note, Rooster is still actively involved in the manufacture of surf craft.
