The Indonesian taxi driver perspective is that Russians are incredibly unfriendly and despised.

They are the exact opposite of Balinese in that regard.

I’m going to stick with my theory that it relates to fear of invasion and thus hostility to strangers, as well as what Grossman termed a “thousand years of slavery” of the Russian soul.

The ABC journo, Scott Bevan, was the ABC Russian correspondent for a while.
He said, soon after he arrived, he had various admin paperwork to sort out which required him to line up at various govt offices. He had his child, a young baby, that he was carrying.
He went to the first place, there was a solid queue but, much to his embarrassment, everyone got out of the way and led him to the front. What’s going on?
The second place, the same thing happened and he was pushed to the front of the line. A Russian in the front laughed at his visible confused embarrassment and said to him,
“Don’t worry. In Russia, babies do not have to wait.”

Similar when we were in China. Queuing for train tickets if someone had to catch a train that was leaving everyone would let them through. Everyone was very friendly to us travelling with a couple of kids.

I think the Russians who travel are probably not representative of the rest of the population.
In the ski towns of Sweden the Russians are the oligarchs and their kids, people who race lambos on the frozen lake and just buy another when they crash them.
I doubt there are many races where the richest people are great company.
