Kempsey Shire Council info on development application (quite brief) ...

Sure, but they are open about being real estate developers.

Seems to have a very bad smell about it that Nick writes a puff piece about Crescent just as his brother is spruiking a real estate development on the flood plain there.

Especially after he spent years building his brand as a hard-core performance only surf journo who openly derided hipster and any retro surf movements.

Just a random coincidence?
It honestly fucking disgusts me.

Nick wouldn't have written the article if he'd known it'd jeopardise the jackhammering.

Just read it- hilarious reading Carroll now romanticising the hipster/longboard scene he pilloried so relentlessly.

Obvs Surfline knows where it's bread is buttered.

He who pays the piper, calls the tune.
Jesus fuck, I just read it. Like an infomercial for the daily fucking mail or something. Nauseating. What the fuck.

I tell you what polebean. I'll see if the crew can get a camera set up at Crescent Head for you. How's that? Then you can check Crescent Head every day of your life!!
So it’s all beanpoles fault!

It’s gotta sting if you’re steve. You finally - finally - get admitted to what you see as the inner sanctum after years of patiently tapping on the door. You get your chance to write a handful of surfboard puff pieces; you feel the thrill of the baksheesh that makes the corporate surfing world go round. You marvel at the simplicity of a system where you write something complimentary and next thing you have a free board. You think that finally - finally - you’ve made it as a Surf Journalist and then Carroll goes and that’s-not-a-knifes you. AGAIN

What?

Mate, I'd rather mow lawns than be a second rate puff piece merchant at retirement age for a bunch of adult learner venture capitalists in Fresno.

Whenever I feel gloomy I can think about that and immediately I'm on top of the world.

I actually feel sad for Nick- he sees himself in bigger terms than writing advertorial for the real estate industry.

“Shearer’s Leap, an exclusive development of 3 and 4 bed executive detached homes for the mature surfer looking to put down roots in the boutique coastal village of Lennox Head. Sydney is just 18 relaxing minutes away, so you can hit the curl in the morning, crush that deal at lunch and be home on the deck for evening espresso martinis with your welcoming new neighbours. I’m steve shearer and I give you my solemn and personal guarantee that Shearer’s Leap is the opportunity of a lifetime. Invest in your future today.”

It has a ring to it- but just a bit too evocative of people jumping off Lennox Point to commit suicide.

Can you rename it?

This part reminds me of John Batman swindling the locals out of Melbourne's land.
In his head, he probably thought he did the right thing too.
Indigenous and settler lives are intertwined here more than in many other Australian surf zones, something any surfer will feel at times. Maybe that’s why Pagey’s words felt like permission; he’s a Dunghutti man, which means he is on country here.

Too camp.

People (loofy) might expect a reach around when keys are handed over.

That bit was full cringe.

White hipster chicks looking for the next Byron would have zero to do with Kempsey crew- guarans.
