Do you think it would be possible to convert these to use for boat trips around indo?

You'd have to hang an outboard on it, I don't think the winch is good enough.

They might be deemed a confined space so means of delivering fresh air would be good.

They'd be good in a Tsunami, that's for sure.

By "boat trips" do you mean transport from A to B or more along the lines of surf trips / tourist trips?
As already mentioned, not much air flow in there, and without a few windows so people can see the horizon, you'll need a barf-bilge.

Mmm might be hard to get hold of those boats actually. I expect they'll all get salvaged by people smugglers and reused.

I wonder what one of those lifeboats is worth? How many did we buy, and are we treating them as disposable?

Does the navy just bung the asylum seekers on there and give it a push toward indo, or does the lifeboat have a means of locomotion (aside from oars)?

They are diesel powered, the skipper sits up top in that raised section at the rear, they get along pretty well. You can have any colour as long as it's orange.

So the navy tows them to the maritime border and says "you've got enough gas to get back to Indo, its that way, try not to hit any reefs or other boats on the way" ???

Slow as hell, no ventilation, no deck space. No privacy. You'd bake like a christmas ham inside. what the hell are you thinking son?
there are soo many other options.
Here's one:

depending on your budget, here's another:

That's it Offshore! I can lash two of them together with a platform in the middle to make a catamaran!
Just got to wait for a couple more turn arounds and I'm in business.

Are the orange ones like the ones George Greenough sold to the US Military?

Unless Al and Nick have a better deal on offer in Vietnam.

Those orange boats pack plenty of power - I saw a video of one pushing a great big ship out of the way with a piece of rope!

I spent 2 years (of my 10 years) in the navy doing border patrol (op relex).

I can unequivocally confirm that sailors have mistreated asylum seekers. I did too. Nothing as bad as alleged in the burning hand saga but roughing them up, throwing them around and generally treating them like scum was common.

There is a permanent psychologist on whatever ship is currently stationed up there just to sort out the sailors heads. The operation is incredibly boring, with little release for those involved. I definitely took out my frustration on whoever we picked up.

I didn't go back to sea after that. Took a couple of years shore work then left.

Why oh why has administration removed your signature?
It made so many people so happy!
Admin "requested" its removal after a couple of guys got official warnings at work when it came up :(
I loved it.
