White Horses - new surf mag

Post by collnarra » Fri May 25, 2012 3:24 pm

Anyone seen this new surf mag? It's published by an imprint of Morrison Media (surfing life etc). The same group of folks are responsible for Smith Journal, I think. I quite like Smith Journal, so it bodes well.

I got an email from them the other day; it's now available. $19.95 is a bit steep, but I haven't been able to judge for myself. None of my local newsagents seem to carry it. I'm not totally put off by the price - I already have a Surfers' Journal sub, and I haven't been totally stoked by the recent issues of it. If White Horses is any good, I might move my spend.

i haven't seen it yet but got a little story in it after gra murdoch asked me to contribute so one's in the mail for me. i'm very favourably disposed towards gra although we've never met but he helped us out with our mag a few years ago and he had a very funny blog for a while, mining the audio motherlode i think it was called. i think stu (2nd reef) and nick carroll also have things in it as well as lots of other people, it's pretty thick isn't? collnarra you might also like to check out shaft while you're at it, another new morrison media publication subtitled "a monthly title dedicated to addressing the leisure requirements of the growing population of cashed-up miners": http://www.publishersaustralia.com.au/_ ... _launches/ i know it sounds like i'm making fun but i'd actually be interested to see especially if it has a fiction section.

Cool, thanks for the heads up. I'll check out Shaft (amusing name). And I'll keep my eyes out for White Horses.

Smith Journal actually had a job opening for an associate editor I was going to apply for. Then I realised it's in Queensland. I would have been perfect for it.

Is it about "board riding" or real, proper surfing on the body?

I had a subscription to ALB which overran its closure, sub the remainder of my subscription has been transferred to White Horses, just beginning to read it.
At first zip through it seems better than the Old ALB format which was getting very dated and basically a formula share almost page by page with every other Morrison publication. + the content was aimed at an age group I left behind decades ago.

The Carroll brothers contribute Nick anarticle and Tom a photographic series

The photos are worth viewing, the article yet to be read!
I suspect there is more substance as most surf mags I can knck over in about an hour and still feel unsated ))((

Read white horses quite a bit more, it certainly isn't suffering from the ravages of teenage angst , I'm enjoying the is flesh in the lines and between them as well as between the ears.
Quoth the man from beyond demographics.

Same for me Otway, my ALB sub reverted to this new one. Just a trial I assume then I'll have to shell out for it. Only had a quick glance so far but it looks pretty high quality, both pics and copy.

I actually bought this today. It's my wife's fault. She wanted to go into Noosa Civic and there was one copy left (or the only one they got in) on the newsagents' rack.
The cover photo got me in.
And as my daughter said. It's more like a book than a magazine.
Haven't started to read it yet.

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.

smnmntll wrote:"White Horses"? they've got to be fcuking kidding, it sounds like a surf mag for your dad circa 1962

Why don't they just call it "Shoot the Curl" and be done with it
I hear ya smnmntll... I questioned that myself. The name wouldn't dislodge itself no matter hard I bashed it against the rock of logic, or scoffed at myself. But it stuck, dammit. I think it was the mix of something both evocative and daggy that clinched it for me.

...and I suspect on a subconscious level, I've been influenced by the gloriously run-down “White Horses" apartment block on the burleigh esplanade I pass on the way to work every morning. Funnily enough I had the name locked in, before scooting back down the esplanade for a surf check one arvo, and actually SAW the sign consciously enough to register 'oh, hang on, is THAT where the name came from?' sheesh.

Sat down for a skim read last night. Great stuff indeed. Looking forward to getting stuck into NC's story near the back when I have time.

I think I'll be back
